Auto to t-5 (5spd) conversion
I am currently looking for a 5.0 fox to buy. Every car that is for sale, seems to have an automatic, and I really like 5 spd's. How much would it cost including parts and labor to convert from an auto to a 5 spd? Can I do it myself? I'm only 16 and am just getting into the mustang hobby, so I have never done something like this before, but I have a feeling im in the hobby for life! Thanks everyone!

you have to get the pedal assy. from 5spd. bellhousing and transmission, throwout fork, throwout bearing, pilot bearing. if you find all trans used it shouldnt cost you more than 1500.00 for everything

I would say just keep searching till you find a 5 speed that you really like. People on this board have done such a project and I've heard them say it can be a pain. So if you have never done a project like that before, it might not be the wisest decision. As far as price, it all depends. You could get away with it for $500, or go all out and spend $2000. I would say buy what you want first, rather then something you really don't. Good luck!!!

I have bought everything for the conversion, and I went with all new parts and I will start the install in about a month or so (some other things I want to do first). If I was buying a new car, I would just look for a 5-sp. I didn't want to sell my car because it was a 1990 in perfect condition and I had put money into it.
However, if you did want to proceed with the project, this is what you would need. T-5 Transmission T-5 Clutch Fork - 86-93 1987-1993 Pedal Assembly Aluminum Foot Pedals Bellhousing Clutch - 10 1/2" Flywheel - for 10 1/2" Clutch Flywheel Bolts Transmission to Block Plate Shifter Shift Boot, Knob, Handle, Noise Barrier Weather Boot Gasket Clutch Quadrant and Adjuster Clutch Cable T-5 Backup Wire Harness Speedometer Gear to match your Gears Pilot Bearing Bellhousing Bolts (You can only use 2 of your AOD ones) Pressure Plate Bolts Clutch Cable Retainer Clip Replacement T-5 Tail Shaft Seal Steel Bearing Retainer Aluminum Driveshaft (Optional) Thanks, DoranW

Oh, and I think the whole thing for me came to about $1200 bucks...although it is not a cheap project, you get do it for much cheaper.

Thanks guys for all of your help. If I were to take on this project, and got rebuilt transmission (t-5), would that be a bad idea? I know someone who would install the parts for cheap. It is just a matter of if going with a rebuilt tranny would be a good idea or not. I don't want to do the project just to have to do it all over again. What do you guys think? Buy a rebuilt or a new tranny if I take on this project?

There are a number of different outlets where you can get a T5 tranny,D&D Performance comes to mind,Hanlon Motorsports,is another.
If you do not want to buy all the parts brand new you can give Mustang Parts Specialties a call they stock everything you need for the conversion,it is all used but if you are buying a used car what is the difference? One thing I did not see mentioned on anyone list was a manual tranny computer,try to find you an A9L ECM,you will hear arguements it does not make a difference,it does,friend of mine swapped his AOD for a Tremec and he is having small problems with air fuel ratio,and other things. Is it contributed to the computer I think so but I have been wrong,but I would get a manual tranny computer also,just my 2 pennies.

Wouldn't recommend the swap from a t-5 to an AOD
I did the swap from a AOD to a t-5. Didn't know about wiring and computers. You must use an ecc-IV manual transmission cumputer. The right dust cover for the t-5. I have spent a lot of money on sessors and am finally figuring every thing out. I have learned a lot about modern day fuel injection. A code scanner is a nice thing to have but a break out box or a computer you set up inbetween the wiring and the computer is just what you need. If I were to do it all over again. I would buy a manual transmission car.

Thanks for all of your input guys... I've decided that I will continue to shop and if I get an automatic, (which I dont want to do) I will convert it to a t-5. or maybe even a t-56. How would that work out? would 3.73's work ok with it? What would be required in this?

Because AOD's are much faster and much more consistent when built right...5 speeds of equal power can not touch me.

i agree, only with a mustang that runs in the 11's though. and when your using an aod thats built right.
