90 GT woes
I have aquired a 90 GT Recently that I installed a 70mm tb and Comp engineering intake and a high volume fuel pump. I now hear a strange vacuum whistle and the car runs like crap. The idle is irratic and this morning it blew a huge white cloud of smoke. I always smell fuel and the plugs are white. If I disconnect the vacuum for the fuel regulator it idles better.
Anyone know where to start? |

I am assuming that vacuum whistle is coming from the tb..Let me guess? BBK or edelbrock tb??
If you are running your stock heads, you might be pushing to much air into the motor..I would try switching the intakes back until you got a set of better flowing heads or as a matter of fact, take your heads off and port them yourself! The TB is BBK. But the intake is Comp Eng. The TB whistle is on all BBK's but this whistle is way different, it is almost like a howl.

Does it have heads? If not, then the 70 is too big in the first place. You have coolant coming from either your egr plate or your lower intake, assuming you did do the lower. Hence the white smoke. I used to have that howl after I did my heads / cam. Turns out I was way rich due to a faulty FPR, and the egr valve was doing it. I think there was so much unburned gas in the exhaust that it caused it to howl. Does it get louder when you press the gas? It went away after I put on a new regulator. I think that was the most annoying and embarassing think I've ever heard on my car.

The 70mm is a little big for a mostly stock motor, a 65mm would be better for now. If I remember correctly the Comp is just a upper that fits onto the stock lower or a GT40 lower. I would first check to make sure the gasket between the EGR spacer and intake isn't leaking, I bet that is where the coolant is getting into the intake. White smoke is coolant, blue is oil. You can bypass that spacer by plugging the two hoses that go into the EGR spacer. The coolant pre-heats the motor when it is cold, helps it idle better. I have had mine bypassed for a couple years no with no issues what so ever. If the coolant is leaking into the intake it will make your plugs white, the water is cleaning everything off. CHeck that gasket first No for the gas smell, if you have off roads you may smell it more then normal, also make sure you didn'y unplug or crush the vent hose that coms out from the top of the fuel tank when you swapped fuel pumps. The one line runs from the top of the tank to a metal tube that turns into a black plastic tube that runs to the charcol canister on the passenger side frame rail. Fuel Pressure should be 38 and timing 14-16 (10 degrees is stock) ------------------ Check Out My Site 91GT,Holley SysteMAX II Kit-Heads 2.02" x 1.60" port matched to a 1262,Anderson N-61,24#,76mm C&L,Full MAC, No A/C or PS or emissions, 12" K&N Filter,RNH PERFORMANCE Ram Air,Ron Davis Radiator,Full Suspension, SPEC stage III clutch, Lakewood SFI bell, S&W 8pt "X" brace,JAZ seats,3:73's,Welds..etc,4:30's and 31 splines coming very soon! <B>12.16 @ 113.5, 1.78 60ft..no traction in the 90 degree [This message has been edited by Rick 91GT (edited 09-05-2001).] |

WOE!!! my bad..didnt make sense to me either..what I was meaning is that with the bigger Intake and stock heads, there might be some bottlenecking going on...Does that sound better or am I still confusing others and myself?? I better go get some sleep..

This make sence to me. The fuel pump was not installed by me so I will have to check that. When you change a fuel pump to a hi volume do you need to change the regulator?
