![]() I've posted awhile back and never got a real answer in terms of some people said this and some people said that but whats the correct textbook answer. 96 Gt auto every option-I say 2:73 which i wanna believe they are but people i've known for years who are always workin on stangs in there garage and swaping transmissions in there house garage know what there talking about i guess and they said 96 had 3:08 for an auto. I hate to keep bringing this question back to life but damn it bugs me sometime

![]() As far as I know the 96 - 98 Gt had 2:73 and the Cobra had the 3:08's. The 3:08 may have been an option, I'm not real sure.
2:73 - 3:08 not a big dif anyway!

![]() OK , I was wrong again. I just checked the mustang specs and for a 98 gt her are the FORD specs. 98 GT 5 speed 2:72 standard - 3:27 optional - 98 GT Auto - 3:08 standard - 3:27 optional.
This is straight from FORD. the 96 may be different, I could not find the spec sheet for that year. Hope this helps

![]() I have a 96-98 rearend in My 94 stang and it came with 3.27 stock. It now has Richmond 3.73 in them. The tag says 3L27 88 which means 3.27 with posi and an 8.8 inch rearend. So best bet it to check the tag

![]() Just put it up on jacks in neutral and see how many revs the driveshaft spins for one rev of the back wheels.

![]() Well you should notice the difference after the install.
Shame you don't have a the full confidence in the install. ![]() - on soapbox - I pray all goes well, but I'd say never invest hard earned money on a vewnture you are not full confident or prepared to get complete satisfaction.- off soap box |

![]() You'll notice, first gear winds out pretty quick and your rear wheels will finally spin without dumping the clutch...
Good choice.

If you do have a limited slip differential, then you should get that number of turns of the drive shaft for each tire rotation that occurs. Not really difficult to understand. Do make sure that the R & L sides are turning equally though showing the limited slip function.. Rev

Yes I know whats being done to my car I'm not a newbie I'm just lookin for different advice. As for 4:10's I'm think I'm gonna go with 3:73's, I'm not a track man and I do alot of driving around 70 so I think the gears I picked are good for a daily driver trying to grow some balls on my stang with the mods I already have

![]() Not trying to convince you... but general rule of thumb for "all around" gearing in the 96-98 Mustang is 3:73's for manual and 4:10's in an automatic...the final gear ration in an auto is different than the final gear ratio in a T-45. Just FYI...
Good Luck on any decision you make.

![]() For AODE cars, 3.73's are still a good choice but we recommend 4.10 gears. A 4.10 may sound extremely steep, but because the AODE's 1st gear is higher (numerically low) and 4th gear (overdrive) is steeper than the T-45, it's a very good choice for the driver interested in making their car perform better.
Quote from Alternative Auto for clarification....

![]() Yea but what about traction and gas mileage, even if its just a couple 100 rpm's it just takes more gas my car gets pretty crappy gas mileage in the first place
