been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
hey, been out of the 5.0 thing for quite some time, not back in it quite yet(ill get another when i stop spending cash on this truck), but i need some help with building a 302.
what im looking to build is a low rpm torquer motor for my truck(its a 1984 ford bronco 2, 4x4, 1/2 ton axles(high pinion dana 44 and an 8.8 out of a f150), detroit locker, 5.13 gears, about 6" of lift(rock crawler springs.....) on 36" military tires. it has a 2.8l in it, which works, but i need more power. i was wondering if a stock 5.0l(87-93) out of a mustang with a edelbrock performer 289 intake and about a 650 off road carb(holley truck avenger) would make a lot of low end power, but still pull decent up top? or would i be better going with a truck motor, and put that carb and intake on it, or even building a motor(need suggestions of parts to use on it, not even sure if the performer 289 would be best, im really rusty on the 302 thing) thanks a lot

I think a 87-93 mustang motor would be ideal for what you need. Just put a low rpm range intake manifold and an off road carb and the 300ft lbs of torque the 5.0 produces would perform very nicely in your truck IMO.

Yeah, what he said. Possibly the Torker II intake would be a better choice. Read the specs, see what RPM range you want to be in, but sounds good to me!

Have you ever considered a 4.9L 300 ci straight 6. Excellent torque and power with the lighter weight. And you can beat the piss out of them, especially great for mudding purposes!

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
ive put 302's through hell, i know they will stand up, but the I6 i believe will be too long to fit in the engine compartment, i believe the 5.0 is an easier swap. plus, i cant live with out that v8 sound

As Jester said, go with the torker II manifold, you won't be sorry. A 600-650 carb is fine. Just make sure you get the right cam! Without the right cam, the power ain't all there. If you're really in for some torque, build a 331. Just my .02.

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
The Torker II is a single plane manifold. It will work great for high RPM horsepower, but it will kill the low end. If low end torque is what you are looking for, stick with fuel injection. The torque from the long runner intakes is highly underrated.

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
Andy's right, I was having a brain fart. As a "general rule" dual plane intakes build power down low, whereas the single plane intakes need the RPM and high flow to make power.
Stick with parts that fit in your RPM range, fuelie motors are also known for low end stump pulling torque, but there's the added cost for all the electronics. Just keep this in mind. Don't "throw" parts together cuz it sounds good, or you like the name. You have to build a "Matched set", and you will be pleasently rewarded. Carb has to work with the intake has to work with the cam has to work with the heads has to work with the headers, etc etc. You''l do just fine!

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
ok, getting closer to the actual swap, what i need is cam info.
will i be allright running an edelbrock performer 289 intake, a 650 off road carb and a stock 87-93 5.0? im not looking for top end power (allthough i wouldnt complain) because i doubt i will ever have my foot to the floor(unless stuck im mud or something, truck is very unstable at high speed, or even taking off fast it would feel like it was doing a wheelie) i just want it to be able to produce good power for pulling(a utility trailer with all my campin gear). it is going to have a compound low of about 180:1, so its not too important the low range power

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
You build a race motor, and put a tini-wennie cam in it. There was a boy from Texas that was on here a few years ago. He had a 302 with an ungodly torque. way more than you normaly see, his hp was low, but it worked for him.

Re: been a long time.... need some advice on building a low rpm 5.0
ok, figured it all out, getting the motor tomorrow.
im running a 95 motor, harness and computer in it, and im going to leave it stock, or else im going to break the pinion gear, or snap axles(which wouldnt be a good thing considering i have almost 1200 canadian in the rear end ). one last question is, can i run an inline fuel pump instead of an in tank? if so will a 155lph be fine(will i need an adjustable regulator, or will the stock one work ok?) thanks

Yes you can run an inline pump, the stock regulator will be fine, a 155lph pump will be more than adequate.

Hey Kris, how you been? Good call on keeping it fuel injected, you won't have to worry about flooding it on big inclines. It'll give you what you want.

not too bad, how about yourself? i got totally out of the mustang thing for a long time, buddy just bought one, i got the bug again, but i cant afford one right now, this 4x4 thing is really expensive, gonna be about 12000 canadian into it.
looks like youve got a little more than the old 13sec gt last time i saw u run that car at the track.
