Default Know anyone that bought a vehicle off ebay?

I'm looking for a vehicle and can't help but notice the great deals on ebay. I'm kind of wondering how honest the whole deal is? If anyone knows anything. I would really appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Default BMW 750m IL

My son's boss (same age, E-business) bought a '98 or 99? BMW 750 IL off of ebay for $40,000. It was low in price and located in NY. As it turned out, the prospective buyer had a brother in NY who checked the car out. It truly was a bargain. He bought it, shipped to Houston, and is still satisfied as far as I know.

Thanks for the quick reply. I probably should do the same. Maybe find a good deal that ends in a few days and drive to wherever it may be locally(somewhere within 3-4hrs) and check it out. Then i would really know what I was bidding on. I'm mainly wondering if I can trust anyone or not. I like to be careful though. Thats a whole lot of money to spend on a vehicle and it be screwed up some how. Most people seem to list every little chip in the paint or scratch and have lots of pictures but you never really know till you see it in person and drive it. Anyone here dealt with a reputable seller on there as far as vehicles go.
Apppreciate the help.

James

My dad was thinking of purchasing a old mustang off E-bay, but he is uncertain too. Like you said there is some really good bargins on ebay. Well if you need someone to check out a car around me, I'm willing to go for you and let you know what it's like plus I have a digital camera so I can get any pictures you need of anything specificly wrong or you would want to know.

If you're buying a fairly expensive car, always have someone, (a third party) inspect the car before you bid on it. There are a lot of shysters selling on eBay. I read a lot of the boards there, and always someone crying about getting a piece of junk. But, they didn't have it inspected and took the word of the seller.

Use common sense and you'll be OK.

What about vehicles with the factory warranty still in place. I'm looking at a 2000 model with 17,000 miles. The vehicle is all the way in texas though. Shipping would be $695.00. I'll save about 5,000 if I buy it from there. Would you do it? There is lots of pictures and they all look good. It has a report on each area of the vehicle and all it says is minor scratch in hood and 60% of tires left. Let me know what you think.

Thanks, James

Thumbs up I know sellers

I dont know anyone whose bought, but Col. Dan w/ the GT350 sold one of his vehicles on ebay(NOT the Shelby), as well as another runnin' buddy who sold his bad *** Corvette that he dumped TONS of money into for show. And of a client of mine who sold his Buick Convertible on Ebay w/ no problems...they were all Smooth Transactions. Everything went great....DO NOT overlook something your interested in...the # of reputable sellers I think FAR outwieghs the CROOKS....IMO of corse...
Check into it!

I would still have it inspected before any bid. Why is such a low milage car on the market? Was it in a Texas flood? Is it a lemon? Has it been wrecked and rebuilt? Too many variables with out being nosey. I don't trust anyone.

CarFax is helpful, but too many things can be hidden and not reported. Use your best judgement and don't get taken by some glib talking salesman.

Well, I made my first phone call to an ebay auto seller. Let's just say, it wasn't pleasant. I asked him about a 2001 taurus he has on ebay with only 2hrs left on the bidding. He acknowledges it and says yeah, it's a great car, blah blah blah. I said ok and ask if he could accept the check I have from my bank. He says, sure we'll work something out. I asked a few more questions about the vehicle like the fact the bidding was at 9,000 and the buy it now price is 13,288.00. Do they sell for the highest bid or what. He then says, well obviously were not going to sell that vehicle for that cheap so I ask about the buy it now price. Then all of a sudden, he says my car doesn't have a buy it now price and starts talking about he has a porsche 911 on ebay right now. He just fell on his head. All of a sudden the car he has on ebay isn't his I mean whats up with that. He asks, Are you sure its mine and I tell him, well your number is listed for the vehicle. I mean what the . I hung up because I got tired of his bull... Anyway, I think I'll give up on ebay. Sometimes all it takes is one person one time. The funniest part about all of this is the rating he had -68 excellent-0 fair-0 poor. Who's buying cars from this guy, his employees? What an idiot. I'll look for a vehicle elsewhere. Thanks for your help everyone. I'm sure there is good folks out there but this is just too big an investment to take a chance in dealing with an idiot.

Thanks again everyone, James

that is a very good idea.........

i almost wired a grand to the guy that hosed me........but i'm not real trusting so i arranged to pick it up the morning after the auction ended..........

since he refused to sell the car to me, i'm sure he woulda taken my $1000 no problem..........

i'm sure many people get great deals on cars on ebay, but the risk is just too big for my tastes

Thumbs up

I know two different people who bought cars off of ebay. They both were looking for specific classic cars and had good experineces. I personally am a little leary of the whole idea of buying a car off the internet. You have no chance to drive it or what kind of shape it is in. That's just me though. There's lots of people who have great experiences. Good luck!

I've bought 2 cars on ebay and sold 3 cars on ebay. Only one auction actually ended, but all were sold/bought as a result of ebay. Let me know if you need any advice...

I bought my '69 Fastback off the internet from a guy in Tennessee. I knew it was going to be in absolutely horrid condition anyways so I wasn't too extremely concerned. I wasn't expecting anything good, at all. In some areas it turned out better than I expected, and in other areas it was worse. But all in all it was about what I had in mind. Your situation is completely different than mine was, though. I don't think I'd buy a car like you're looking for off the internet. I would just take some trips to dealerships around your area and if no one had what you're looking for, tell your local dealer and he should be able to get something from a different dealership close to what you have in mind. Most do this free of charge with no obligations. Good luck!

I have a buddy that sells a bunch of cars on ebay. His wife works at a pretty large bank and handles the repo cars. He puts them on ebay and usually makes between loan value and retail.

When it comes to a repo banks just want there money. He sells BMW's, SUV's, some real nice stuff that is in good shape.

Update: Like I said I kind of gave up on ebay but didn't give up on a good deal. My wife and I drove all over the place comparing prices and deals that dealers and private sellers were offering us. We now own are the proud owners of a 1998 Eddie Bauer Expedition. It has 80,000 miles which is high but it rides real nice and has no oil leaks at all so were optimistic. We got it for 15,000 out the door so all in all were happy. I just wanted to let you guys know that and I really appreciate all the ideas. Maybe I'll try ebay another time but it will definitely have to be something I can see and drive. Happy Holidays everyone.

Later, James
