Power Steering on my 65
I just purchased a 65 mustang coupe and I have a question about upgrading the steering. The car originally had a 6 cylinder with a manual transmission, steering, and brakes. My plan is to make the car a daily driver for my 17 year old daughter. On a local classified board I found a power steering setup from a 66 mustang that had a 289 (it was $125.00). My question is will this PS unit fit in my 6 cylinder car? If it will not bolt in how much do I need to change to add power steering? I do plan on rebuilding it prior to installation but it’s been more than 20 years since my last mustang I’m looking for some advice from people more knowledgeable than my self. Thanks in advance.

Re: Power Steering on my 65
I know if you have 6 cylinder you have to get p/s set up for that. I don't think that a 8 cly. set up will work w/o mods. If you want a better steering system and stay with non p/s try a quick ratio steering it may be cheaper. Check on this link: www.mustangdepot.com . They have a couple different choices to choose from.
I think this might help you!!!! I have manual rack w/quicker ratio and it feels almost like p/s Last edited by stanger66; 03-25-2006 at 12:38 AM.. |

V-8 car and 6 cyl car have different parts.
You'll have to find a 6 cyl. P/S set up.

Re: Power Steering on my 65
Thanks guys. We just picked up the car today and will start working on it tomorrow. It's a father/daughter project and should be a lot of fun. We trailered it home and she didn't take her eyes off the side view mirror the whole way home (about 80 miles).
