New Member, Need Suggestions
Hey Everyone,
Just registered for this board, quick info about me, I'm a 27 year old Firefighter/Paramedic from Central Florida. At the present moment, I have about 4000 burning a whole in my Savings account with which I want to buy somewhere between a 1987 and 1993 5.0. I was just about ready to close on a covertible a few days ago till i ran a carfax on it and found it was totalled up in Michigan. Anyways, I need whatever suggestions anybody wants to offer as far as what to look for in a used mustang, whats a reasonable price, which model years may be better, ect. Are roll bars difficult to put in the convertibles (im paranoid)? Is it better to buy one that is close to stock?? Any help will be appreciated, and I look forward to (after I finally get my car) becoming an active member of this board. Thanks Jason |

Welcome Jason. I am new to the board myself. I just picked up my 83' yesterday and am having a blast. I already started working on it. I changed the master cylinder yesterday and addressed a few others items. I plan on going for a spin here in a little while. Just take your time and check as many items on the car that you can. If you need to make a check list and go over everything. Mark the items that need to be repaired and you can bring that up with the seller before closing a the transaction.

87 and 88 stangs are sped density which is difficult to mod. 89-93 stangs are mass air cars. I used to have an 88 GT convertible and I didnt like the fox body vert too much.
I prefer the LX over all other stangs. But thats just me.

Its nice to find one that is as close to stock as possible. I have a belief that the more mods on a car when you buy it, the more it has been beat on in the past. I would have to say that I like the coupe's better, even though I have a gt. I dont care much for the verts myself, but if you like them, by all means... Fair warning, mods are like crack, once you try it, you cant quit. Just enjoy whatever you find.

It's funny, the only ones I LIKE are the vert's you can take your hatchback escort wannabes to the junk yard for all I care... but hey it's all a matter of preference.. but the important things to think about are.... 89-93 is mass air, unless it was a CA car then 88 will have mass air... this makes modding alot easier... the next thing to think about is.. if you buy a stock car you'll have to spend lots on mods... if you buy a car that's got lots of mods allready you can save money there kinda.. though like other;s said they get beat on more.. but to be honest they little 302s can take a beating... I'd be more worried about the tranny then the block.
I dont care what anyone says, these stock 5.0 are pigs... you will drop atleast 2Gs into the car to make it perform to the level of any performance car that was release recently, including the new mustangs and camaros... but it's fun the do the work yourself... LX notches are the lightest then I would guess an LX hatch, then a GT hatch then an LX vert and then a GT vert. So as it stands I have the heaviest of the mustangs and couple that with an AOD and I'm got a pig right out of the box.. but put some money into it and you've got a nice fast car and there's nothing like a convertable, you shoudl know you live in FL, there's only a few shorts months of top down wether here in MA... ok that's enough...

Welcome to MW!
It's amazing how many people have modded these cars that it may be a challenge to find a relatively low mile, good condition and unmolested Mustang of those years - but they are out there. If it were me, I would try to find one that wasn't modded at all or at least not very much. Once you find a car you like, come back here with the details and we can help you determine if it's a good buy or not. Also, what are you planning to do with the car? Just tool around in it on the weekends? Mainly a drag car? Daily driver? Thanks and good luck, E

well if they made an escort convertible I'm sure it would look very similar... in wich case I would say, "yeah my car is an escort vert wannabe" who cares man.. its a matter of preference... am I the only one who sees these dated boxmobiles for what they are? I love my car, it's fun to drive, bla bla bla... but it's gas guzzlin', low horsepower makin', plastic bread box on wheels. Now we're getting off the topic and this is silly... I'm sorry I offended your car, maybe I should buy it some flowers and say I'm sorry. You can probably fit alot of flowers in that escort.... er.. mustang hatchback...
