Post Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

I already have the tranny removed from my '86 5.0 Mustang and I would like to replace the leaking oil pan gasket. It appears that the engine must be raised to remove the oil pan. If this is true, how much does the engine need to be raised? Is an engine hoist the best choice or is there an easier method? What must be removed/unhooked before removing the oil pan? Thanks.

An engine hiost is the best way to go. You'll have to unbolt your engine mounts and raise the engine enough to lower the pan untill the oil pump is almost flush with the top of the pan. Also make sure you get a one piece gasket. It seals a lot better. Hope this helps.

With the transmission removed, the only safe way is with a hoist. Don`t forget to put a new rear seal in while you have it apart.
