Zex Nitrous
Hey, I just ordered a Zex Nitrous kit. It seems that this kit has a strong reputation as being reliable and easy to install. It is adjustable from 55-75 hp, which is fine by me because I did not want the temptation to jet beyond 75hp (of course I could probably run 100 safely without much worry).
I have a friend with a shop that will help me install it and I purchased a back issue of MM&FF where they installed one on a '98 GT. I'm tired of all the bullshit bolt-ons and want some real power. I'm hoping that the 75 shot will take me from high 13.5s to somewhere in the 12s (even if it is 12.9s). I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm considering a write up with pictures, but don't know if I should bother. ------------------ 1998 Triple blk Cobra Convertible 4.10 gears, ASP pullies, Bassanni X-pipe, Steeda subframe , Tri-Ax shifter, UPR Powerpipe, 80mm Pro-M Best ET 13.59 @ 103.2mph (2.1 60') |

Here's what the "Hot and Easy" Zex did for me:
ET before Zex and X-pipe: 14.97 at 94.02 ET after: 14.18 at 100.02 Gain of .79 seconds and 6 MPH ------------------ 1998 Mustang GT 14.18@100.56 "Traction Impaired" or "Nitto Needy" |

Hammer, looks like great times for only a 75 shot huh? Good work!
You got .8 out of it, I'd be happy to gain .6 or a little more. How's the seat of the pants difference? |

It's not a "throw you into the back of the seat" boost, but you can definately tell the difference...
Makes launching on street tires a little challenging too... ------------------ 1998 Mustang GT 14.18@100.56 "Traction Impaired" or "Nitto Needy" |

I run the ZEX system on a 1996 s281 SALEEN. I like the part about not using it unless you arm the switch and open the throttle wide open. That makes it handy for driving around town normally yet having the juice there......Rumor has it ZEX is working on a 100/125 shot. I have asked them if the existing system can be modified to accept this added boost. Has anyone had trouble with the plugs showing too lean of a mixture with the ZEX system? I am running the same Bosch plug I ran before the juice and it seems to work fine........

A 100/125 shot... cool!
My autolite plugs are working fine after a small bout of regapping. I don't see why you just couldn't get the new jets for the new boost rating. (unless there's something internal in the box I don't know about) Bad news is that I have a small line leak somewhere between the bottle and the solenoid box, and I may have to eventually run a new line.... but I guess that's the breaks sometimes... I wonder if we need to start worrying about a timing adjustment at around a 125 boost.. Just think of it, an actual REASON to buy a Steeda timing adjuster... ------------------ 1998 Mustang GT 14.18@100.56 "Traction Impaired" or "Nitto Needy" |

It's probably going to be more complicated than just enlarging the opening in the nozzle but who knows. One thing I would recommend is placing a very thin washer on either side of your nozzle fitting that runs through the rubber air intake duct. I didn't like the idea of tightening the fitting into the rubber. It is very rare for the line to have a hole in it. Get a soap bottle and check the fittings at the bottle and the box. Also, the solenoid will leak off after the bottle has been closed over a period of time.......

I get a 200 psi loss about every hour if I close the bottle without purging the line. (I know, it SHOULD be purged)
I also tried this with plugging up the end that goes to the solenoid, so either I have a natural bleed off, or I have a loss SOMEWHERE in the line. Its not bad while I'm using it (in fact, I have yet to see it drop other than cooling off), but the thought of me losing even a fraction of expensive N20 (not to mention boost), is irritating to me. I've looked everywhere that's easy to look at without getting it back up on the lift, so that may be next. ------------------ 1998 Mustang GT 14.18@100.56 "Traction Impaired" or "Nitto Needy" |
