Default check engine light

Hello Mustang Works ( New to site)

I own a 1993 5.0 Mustang Conv that has some modifications. I put on new headers, high flow air filter, cat back pipes (no mufflers), new electronic ignition system. I keep getting a check engine light . The code is #31 . Which the book says is Canister or EGR valve control system. Should I replace the EGR valve or EGR position sensor ?? Or is it because I made those modifications , and new EGR parts will not shut down that code ?? Please Help Thanks

I'll be the first to say welcome to MW!!!

Okay, with a code 31 it's usually the sensor that needs replacing and nothing else. The original Ford-designed unit has a relatively short service life compared to most any other sensor on the car, as we've found. Wells makes a nice replacement unit, but any reputable brand at most parts stores will work just fine. I remember the code 31 meaning that the EVP (EGR valve position) sensor voltage is below limit, BTW. None of your modifications should cause that code, either.

When you say, "new electronic ignition system," what do you mean by that? Tell us exactly what you replaced.

Thank you for your quick response Capri306.

I was hoping for that information. It sounds like a easy fix. So I should just install a new EGR position sensor ?? Right ?? As for the electronic ignition upgrade, I installed a Jacobs Electronic Pro Street Energy Pac and a Jacobs Ultra Coil. Also BBK tuned headers and BBK High Flow Air Filter .I removed the stock mufflers and installed 2 1/4 " pipes from the cats back. She sounds great !! Nice and throaty.

Thanks again for the information.

Default egr

is the pipe from the egr to header there and connected? do you have converters and smog pump? the absence of these parts can, how i do not know, cause this code to set.
