'95 AOD GT vs. '67 modified Camaro, GOTTA WIN! Help?!?
I'm racing my friends '67 camaro on the 24th. And he's DEFINITELY not stock. He's got a 383 stroker, cam, headers, 4:10 gears and a racing clutch. And I'm a stock AOD!!!
Now, here's the dilemma. I HAVE to beat him! Were talking PRIDE here boys! It's your typical one best friend is a stanger, the other is a bow tie! I'm going to spend around 1500 before the 24th (cause I got 2 checks coming in), and he's not gonna do anything by then. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO??? I CAN'T LOSE!!! Right now I'm leaning towards the following: 1. 11 or 13 degree timing 2. remove air silencer 3. 4:10 gears 4. shift kit 5. headers (maybe exhaust) 6. cold air intake Now I know I can do the first two myself, so no labor, but how much for parts and installation on the rest? What brands? Is this the best way to go, considering the budget? It's crunch time boys... |

Do the first 2 items and then just get the 4.10's and some slicks.

Don't want to burst your bubble but it your friends camaro is in any decent state of tune he is going to completely smoke your A&& with the mods you are thinking about doing. First off definately yank the air silencer, it's free and it might give you a few extra hp.
4:10 gears: $400 Nitros system: $550 I think nitrosworks makes a kit that's adjustable to 150 shot, i'd recomend that, I wouldn't run it with the 150 shot in all the time though(until you do more fuel mods) just for this race with the leftover $550 i'd get some good tires, get some slicks or if you want to run them all the time on the street get some drag radials... if you have any money leftover get pullies, offroad hpipe, headers in that order... GOOD LUCK and let us know how you do ------------------ 92 AOD GT, K&N, ram air, pulleys, 2 ch. flowmasters, 4:10's, shift kit, 1 5/8 mac longtubes and offroad hpipe 14.249 @ 97.34 mph before the headers and hpipe |

Dude that Camaro could be pumping out from a minimum of 350 HP to 500+ depending on the Heads and Cam he used. A stock 300 HP 350 67 Camaro would probably run about High 14's low 15's. About as fast as a average stock 5.0. A properly tweaked 383 is a torque monster and can easily break into the High 12's low 13's so that should be your target speed.
Your best bet, Remove the silencer, get a K&N filtercharger. Then get the biggest NOS shot you can afford. You may have to retard your timing to compensate not sure. Nothing else I can think of will get you that fast quickly enough. ------------------ Frank W 90 5.0 LX coupe Stone stock Two Broken T-5's at the Trans shop now. Yea I had a friend with a 67 Camero automatic that had a 377 stroker and 4.10 gears and it would go 7.70s in the 1/8 mile on drag radials. Thats with a car that looked like it should be in a show, it had the fatory rally wheels and factory interior. It definately didn't look like a race car. That is alot of motor. He said it wasn't hooking well either, he would probably have gone faster with slicks.

OK Brotha......
4.10's are a must...cost $450-$500 Find yourself a used Nitrous kit... Try http://pscaracing.com I think there is one there. Most everyone selling in there is from southern Cal. Should get that for $250-$300 A set of tires on rims...(stickies)$200-$300 for the combo....get 26 X 10's same thing..used...check the bulletin board at some local speed shops or psca site...there are some tires for sure there. I told you b4 if you came to Fresno for the day i'd help ya wrench on it...The kit will take about 2 1/2-3 hours...Tweak the line pressure on your AOD and you should go about 12.90 very consistently...And i spray 100 shot w/ timing at 12* ------------------ 4.10's,long tubes & 75 shot...Goes 12.50's Check it out at http://www.burnouts.webprovider.com |

forget it, save your money. You dont have a chance. A stock AOD car needs to come a LONG WAY to hang with a stroker camaro.

I agree with Mach 1. I have put lots of money into my car. I didn't even have to pay for labor on lots of it. Some came with car. Right now I'm hoping that on a tire I can hit 12.5. Look at my post with veteran help needed for all my mods. It has cost me over 12.5k. I didn't even pay labor on most of it. Only labor that I paid was for tranny and front springs, struts. Nitrous is the only thing that can save you. That along with a good tire and a gear. That is the cheapest alternative. But I wouldn't bother.

Your best bet is to ask him for 8 cars. :-) Tell him it's for the difference in cubes. If your pony is bone stock you still may get beat. That will be more embarssing. Make sure to get the bust too. Stack the odds againts him. Right now you are definately out gunned.

Allright, you get the N20, stickies, gears, and a shift kit and you will probably dust him.
I'm getting tired of this WOW 383!! BS. Did Skyman not just beat one, spinning like mad to probably a 13-somthing no less? Give me a break, I beat a 383 Mopar in a Charger type vehicle not 6mo ago. It had a 383, cam, intake, and gears with an auto. Me, stock 87GT 5spd no timing and exhaust. You never know how well tuned his car is, how well he's gonna hook, and how good he can drive. Even if the mods don't save you, which I'm betting they will, you'll have them later on. Piston, I hope to god you're including the price of the car, cause if you're not, you should be in the 10's with that kind of money. |

Wish I was. Where do you all get your parts? Am I just over paying for them? Summit is where I get my. $2200 on Suspension. $1800 for Rims and tires (18inch). $2900 for Tranny and labor plus misc. $3500 for Motor parts. $500 for labor for front struts and springs + alignment. $950 for PMS. I know that I paid an extra penny for o-ringing the heads. I didn't know you could by them like that at the time (dumb me). I don't think the above comes out to $12.5 but there are things I forgot in there.
And of course if I got the bottle for an additional $500 bucks I would be up there. But I don't want my car bottle fed like a baby for now. Nothing wrong with nitrous I just want the power to be there all the time. With car I spent 24k. I picked it up at 12.5k with 26k miles great condition. Including some mods. About a year and a half ago I think. [This message has been edited by Piston (edited 03-06-2001).] |

I've seen 383 stroker small blocks in lots of different Chevy's over the years - some of these cars just flat fly and others do not run as well as you would think. A lot also depends on how well the rest of his car is sorted out as there are a lot of 400+ hp cars out there that can't put this type of power to the ground efficiently. I've seen stroker cars at the strip that only run 13's but I have a friend with a 383 stroker in a well sorted out 70 Nova that will run 11.90's like clock work all day on the motor alone (Goes 11.20's with a 125 shot). You by far have the best idea of anyone here on how well this particular car really runs, so let this be your guide on how much you want to invest in your car in order to go for this kill. As suggested, NOS, gears, a shift kit and tires will give you the most bang for the buck. Good luck!

I have about $5500-6K in my car....including the car.
car=$3800 ('89 notch had 68,000 on it) Gear installed=$200 (ford mechanic..gets used gears from work) Rims=$250 used from a guy selling his stang(Convo pro's) Nitrous kit=$425(5115 dry kit w/ purge, guages, heater & blanket) MSD 6AL= $80 (used from a swap meet) Hurst shifter=$50 (old style...used) Pulleys=$0( took them off my old car) MAC long tubes=$150 (swap meet) Flowmaster 2 1/2" cat-back=$350 i think??? The only thing i really bought new. 50/50's=$100(new) Southsides=$170 (new) That comes up to $5575 counting the price of the car....My best time is 12.52@112 on 100 shot..13.28 on the motor I also have an extrude honed cobra upper and lower i got for $425 w/ the edelbrock heads i'm getting this weekend for $600.....That should put cost at @ $7100 (including $500 for labor) And will absolutely run 11's on that combo. I figure about 11.60-11.80 @ about 116 So your not getting ripped off...your just not spending wisely. There are some things i wouldn't buy used...but there is a lot where you can't go wrong ------------------ 4.10's,long tubes & 75 shot...Goes 12.50's Check it out at http://www.burnouts.webprovider.com [This message has been edited by NOS_Notch (edited 03-06-2001).] |
