Correcting the Speedo on 4R70W car.
Ok I have had my 3.73's in for a while and I havent corrected the Speedo yet. I havent really driven the car much either now that I think of it. Anyway, what is the best way to correct the speedo on a 96 Gt with the 4R70W. The ways I've heard of are, the speedo gear, an abbot box (Spelling?), A chip, ( I dont know which one?) and the Hypertech Power Programer. So whats the best way to go? Price isnt so much of a problem. Any help out there from people with 96-98 4R70W Stangs who have gears would be great or anyone who knows whats up. Thanks for the help.

All you need is a speedo gear for the 96-98 standard tranny modulars...
I'm not certain, but I think the 96-98 autos are the same...

Hammer is correct as always. The plastic gear for the auto is about 10 - 15 bucks and installs in minutes! I think brothers performance has them in there catalog.
The 99 up cars require a 100 dollar speedo calibrator or chip/programmer

I had the speedo gear installed in my auto, it's not accurate though. I am off by about 5MPH from about 50 and above. I know it's not supposed to be perfect. For my car the speedo gear for 3.73 and 4.10 are the same number of splines, so there's a marginal difference in real speed readings.

That's the one I have... Like I mentioned, it's for the 3.55/3.73/4.10 and it's all the same part number. ... I guess you were talking to me, if not, then sorry for the reply... hehe
I was wondering about it before I had it installed, what's the deal with having the same number of teeth on a gear and saying it calibrates the speedo correctly if you use the same part for 3 different ratios... oh well, thank god we have police and those lovely radar guns.! :-D

Your best bet is a Dallas Mustang Speedcal. Expensive but accurate and worth the money. I don't think a computer chip can calibrate the speedo on 96-98 GT/Cobra's. Only on 99+ stangs.

This device uses a binary DIP switch to recalibrate it on the inside. If you look on the page, you can use their caclulator to custom tune it to what you need.

I believe this device is also only for 5-Spd stangs.. I don't think it works for AODE/4R70W, the harness is different.
