Opposing gear opinions?
Hi guys, I am currently running 355's but I just purchased a set of 4:10's and plan on installing them tommorow.
Some people tell me that they are way to steep and that I will end up past my powerband instead of in it, and others just say that they are waay too steep for the street and that its gonna kill my motor quick. Then others tell me that theyre the only way to go if I am serious about going fast, especialy since my car is a heavy mofo and my powerband has shifted up 1000rpms after installing the heads and intake. Can anyone make some sense of this? ------------------ 95GT, TFS T.W. heads, Holley Intake, B303 cam, FRPP 30lb injectors, Scorpion 1.6 rollers, 65mm TB, 73mm MAF, BBK Longtubes, Flowmaster cat back, March Pulleys, MSD coil, 9mm wires, Tremec 3550 trans, Pro5.0 shifter,10.5 Motorsport clutch, FMS aluminum driveshaft, weld in subframe connectors. 190lph pump, BBK adj FPR. |

4.10's are mainly used for racing that is what you intend to do. The gear setup you have now isnt all that bad. The most common setup are 3.73's. 4.10's will make you burn the **** out of your tires on the street when you launch hard. They will also make your car rev up real high on the highway. It really depends on where and how you drive you car.

They are a steep gear but I think you will be ok. The only thing that would be concerning is at the track, you might run out of motor on the top end. A buddy was running 4.10's in his 87 coupe and had that problem with 245/50 Nitto DR's. But with a taller tire that shouldn't be a problem. The 10's were a blast on the street though ...What size tire do you run?? If worse comes to worse you might have to step up a tire size to compensate for the steep gear.....73's would be the gear but it's not worth the cost to swap from 55's to 73's...I say go with the 4.10's... IMO

Thanks for the input guys. I am feeling the same way. Im sick of pissing around. I didnt put all this cash into my car to run tall gears and get beat. Im running the 225 Nittos now and I spun the hell out of them before my heads and intake with the 355's. Im not to partial to the Nittos. The best 60 ft I ever got with them was a 2.0 and that was right after they sprayed the track down with VHT. I think Im going to get a wider set of BFG's for the street and buy a set of slicks for the track.

Definatly run a 26"+ tire with the 4.10's.
You should loose the B cam which is trying to make your peak HP at 5100rpm. Or possibly add 1.7's to it. You car should definatly be trapping in the 105+'s Skyler ------------------ -1989 Saleen Mustang #406- TFS TW Heads, E-303, Edelbrock intake, 70mm TB, 73mm MAF, 24lb injectors, 1 5/8 shorties, Off Road H, 3 Chamber flows, Jaz Race seats, Back seat removed, sub-frames, Roll Cage, and a 80 shot of N20. 12.54@107.4 Motor 332RWHP, 350rwtq |

You still goin next saturday Sky? I REALLY like these rockers so I think I might just install an F cam. I called Trick Flow and they said that it would clear fine, 226 duration and 514 lift. But if I have to get another chip burnt for it Im going to be REAL pissed.

4.10s are a little steep, but they will hurt nothing. With a stick though you should have went 3.73s. If you ere an automatic 4.10s would be perfect.

Why are 373's better? I just didnt feel that it was worth the cash to go from a 355 to a 373. They seem to be working OK for Sky, but then every car is different.

Dont worry, you have a heads and cam mustang, you shouldnt blow outta the powerband, just dont run those 50's tires, im the only idiot around my neighborhood that runs these crappy 3.27's, all the guys serious about racing run 4.10's, 4.30's, even 4.56, and at the track you will have slicks if your serious about going fast.
Btw, my friend has a 5spd and 4.10s in his 85, and he and my brother drove 3 hrs to the coast, 70mph all the way, on 26x10.5 et streets, and skinnies, no problems, didnt get the best of gas mileage, but it wasnt the worst....sheeeitot man just get em, and put the front tires in the air ! ------------------ 90 lx coupe: 5spd, energy susp trans mounts, fms hd clutch, Mac coldair fenderwell, Mac h-pipe, supercoil, ADS chip, 160 stat, aluminum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs. Hehehe, we run 6.86's in the Sprint car, but then again, it doesn't have a transmission.
My general rule of thumb is 3.73's for a 5 speed and 4.10's for an auto, but there are other factors. Sky knows how to drive a race car, and can handle 4.10's easy, but it took a little work. 2600 rpm's w/ 4.10's at 70 mph seems a little overly optimistic - unless you've got yourself a 6 speed trans .
I think you'll be ok w/ the 4.10's, but I do think that unless you get yourself some more rubber in the rear, you'll have a tough launch. And, I do think you'll be close to out of gear at te end of your 1/4 runs. ------------------ '90 5.0 LX - heads, intake, cam, fuel delivery, gears, full exhaust, pulleys, ignition, drag springs, front brake upgrade, a/c delete, K&N cone filter charger.......and much more! 1/4 mile: 12.29 @115 60': 1.78 |

Yep, I run 265 BFG radials out abck with the 4:10 and still have a hard time planting the tires in second, RPM's at 2900 at about 70mph for me though. Burn'em up have a blast, oh and yes I am at the end of my power band in the 1/4 mile. but it is just enough though.

What kind of gears do you recommend for a AOD 92 Vert with some of the basic bolt ons?
What I'm asking is are these 4.10 gears just for the higher performance stangs or do they work well for lightly modified cars as well? What kind of things could you expect while running these on the street? Also how much will it cap your top speed by? |

4.10's are fine for your AOD 'vert. You'll see much better low-end on the street - where you want it - higher but still reasonable RPM's on the highway and slightly lower gas mileage; worth the trade-off for the increased acceleration you'll get from 4.10's. Top speed might go down a bit as you'll be around 5000 RPM at 130 or so, but unless you plan to drive on the German autobahn a lot, that shouldn't be a problem. |

If anyone says 3.73's for preformace again I must kill you!
4.10 + is the only way. Nothing else is worth it in my opinion. I wish I had 4.56's now since I'm building my engine now that will rev about 1600 rpm's higher, but too late, I still love the 4.10's! Its perfect for driving around... I wouldn't suggest it for a transmission w/o overdrive thats street driven, and yes... with 225/55/16 and pony wheels i'm at about 2600-2700 rpms. ------------------ Joe Zemaitis, Grand Rapids Michigan 1991 Mustang GT. When you guys say that you are running out of gear at the end of the qtr mile you are refering to 4th gear RIGHT? Because I sure as hell dont want to hit 5th in the qtr mile.
