Default Why do you hate rice and why?

I'm starting this thread to gain insight, not to start a flame war. If you want to ***** about a comment someone makes in this thread please email them. Don't post it here. In other words, be civil with your comments.

What I want to know is what is it about rice that disgusts you so much that you can honestly say you hate it. Why do big wings and ground effects turn your stomach. If a color coded interior makes you puke, tell me why.

Is it just because you have a reputation to uphold as a Stanger, and since your friends hate it you must too? Or is your hate genuine? Does having a cowl hood make you cool, and a carbon fiber hood make you a dork? If so, please explain why. Do neon lights under a car set you into epileptic convulsions? Did "The Slow and the Curious" make you laugh?

I find it hard to believe that so many people actually think exactly the same way about some of the things these kids do to their cars. I mean, how can every Stanger out there hate the exact same things about these cars? If I put a 3 foot tall wing on the back of my Coupe can I still join your Mustang club? If you say no, what if my Stang is faster than yours? If the answer is still no, then what if it is a $56,000 Cobra R that comes factory with a 3 foot tall wing. Can I join then? Everyone seemed to love the hell out of that car.

What's your opinion?

Rice, to me, is atitude. A "ricer" is someone who loves to talk **** about how fast his slow *** Civic(or other) is.

They don't know JACK about cars, and simply try and BS their way through conversations if they happen to meet someone who does know about cars. And don't take this as just about imports, I hate domestic guys that don't know jack about cars, too.

As for the wing/ground effects/exc. They are just butt *** ugly. I would mock them no matter what kind of car they were on.

As for the wing on the Cobra R, it's functional. A ricer could care less if his wing is functional.

since i seem to be representing the other side, i'll tell you why i "hate" the closed-minded, ignorant, hard-core domestic guys......

i love autocross. i've ran a few. i've worked more. i watch everyone i can. whenever the local autocrosses are held in public locations, such as mall or Walmart parking lots, a bunch of domestic guys will show up and watch. no problem there, i think thats cool.

these guys roll up in everything from jacked up in the rear, cowl hooded, "ain't skeered" 6 bangin' 80-something regals to new camaro's and mustang cobras. these guys set up lawn chairs about 10 feet from the workers and constantly talk smack about the cars and the workers. "hey pussy, which rice burner is yours?", "i can smoke your car AND kick your arse"......some get pissed when their beloved mustang or camaro runs a higher time than an omni glhs or a crx and call the event stupid and gay.......some make fun of the ricers' loud exhausts and stickers (when in actuality, many of these are trailered race cars with small-time sponsors, running open exhausts).....

sometimes i turn around and ask why they aren't running.....i get responses like it is stupid or for fags or their car is so much faster than all the volkswagens, bimmers, and hondas that it is pointless.....i even offered to pay one guys entry fee, he still turned me down

I hate certian rice and certain domestics too, why because of atitude. One thinks they can dog the only and their gets all big and everything becomes a trash talking contest.

I do drive domestic, I just wish people could just get along. We all love cars, just leave it at that. Yes people do get extreme with colors and fiberglass.. some come out great and others not so great but I'll respect anyone who would respect me too and not talk about my projects. But people will be people and talking and atitudes go with the "ricer" crowd, because everyone want to be the top dog.

I think you digging too deep into this subject. Dont make more out of it than it is.

People have different opinions on what they like. Pretty simple. It doesnt get any more complicated than that.

Now some people might have a genuine disgust of something that turns their stomach (for me, its neon lights) while others might just want to jump on the bandwagon and hate neon lights because they think its cool to hate neon lights, while deep inside they really like neon lights and would have them on thier car if their buddies didnt say they were uncool.

These types arent true "car" guys and are just falling to peer pressure. If you cant tell the difference, then I can understand why you would ask this question in the first place.

There are people who have a true passion of cars and others who are just trying to be cool. Most of the time it seems that the "ricer" is one who is trying to be cool and doesnt have the desire to possess real knowledge about his ride or how it works mechanically.

Remember, "rice" is an attitude, not a reflection on the make of car you drive.

I guess 3 foot wings look like crap to most of us, and they are not functional in any way, so we would consider that a "rice" mod, the same goes with stickers and neon lights. To me they make the car ugly. There are many people who feel this way, and there are many that dont.

A "true" enthusiest is someone who would pass on the 3 foot wing and use that money elsewhere on the car, perhaps for an engine modification or something "tasteful".

Do you see the difference?

Maybe Im wrong, I dont really know, as I dont hang out at the tracks or autocross and dont see a lot of the cars out there. I just notice these types of cars on the streets and this is what I see.

me, just don't like the big stupid non-functional wings and the ugly body kits and the lame neon lights all over the body some cars have. if the car look good than cool i will tell them that, if it looks ugly than its ugly. also if a person has a bad attitude than i will tell them. but most people i have run into haven't had many smart assed comments of how their car is better. but if someone doesn't like my view on things than too bad for them. not everyone's viw on things are the same or as fair as others. i someone can't handle anothers views than they are gonna have a hard time in life cause there are alot of people out there that are gonna disagree with you. later

As has been said over and over, I think we all have respect for fast cars. Whether if be a mustang, camaro, or even a little rice rocket. If the owner has dedictaed time and money to make his car perform well, ill give him some respect. On the other hand, if somebody takes a car, throws on a picnic table wing, a fart can, colored mirrors, neon lights, clear lenses, chrome windshield wipers, "racing interior", padded seatbelts, pep boys racing rims, and dozens of stickers on it, but yet endlessly rants on and on about how his car is the baddest s.o.b around, even though he probably has never even looked under the hood, well that ladies and gentlemen is what i call rice. As far as the three foot wing goes, what purpose do wings serve on true race cars? Downforce. The downforce put increasing pressure on the rear of a top fuel car to keep its a** end from losing traction. Well why the hell would you put a wing on a front wheel drive car! If anything they should put the wing on the hood. As far as the whole import vs. domestic issue, I just dont like little import cars. Does that mean I am going to go around spitting on every import I see, no. I just could care less about a little car with hardly any power. Do I assume all imports and their drivers are "rice". No. Where I go to college in sw florida, its swarming with rice, ive seen mustangs, f bodies, beemers, and one I saw a riced out lightning. Just because most rice is comprised of the import crowd, does not mean that all of us "rice haters" hate imports as a whole, it just means WE HATE RICE!

Ok, let's look at this another way.

If I have a 10 second Mustang that I mainly used for road racing, would a 3 foot wing be acceptable?

Oh, and yes, there is a place for a wing on the rear of a front wheel drive car. The front of a front engine car will generally have more downforce than the rear, whether it's front, or rear wheel drive. If a 50/50 balance cannot be achieved by weight distribution then a wing can help. Granted I understand none of these kids on the road have the ability, or the desire to test just how much downforce their car needs at any give speed, and they install them for looks alone, but these wings have to contribute something to the way the car handles.

Now, who cares to discuss windshield washer lights?

What get me about rice is that they try to look fast but they aren't. i have seen a few cars with the big wing and rest of car is stock. or car only has nice rims on front ( or back) the ones that weave in and out of traffic like there speed racer but when they are beside you at a light they don't do anything and wait for you to go and they just put-put away. and whats with the flybys?? when you do get one to run and you shutdown cause your way ahead and soon they come flying past you like they ran you down...

cbring: thats what i call domestic rice!! all they do is talk about how fast they are but never prove it!!!

I'm gonna jump on Mach 1's bandwagon and agree that it's an attitude and it just doesn't apply to foreign cars cause i've seen american cars riced up also.

it's an attitude, domestic or import.
the people who continually bash everyone that drives an import are annoying. I wish they'd get over it already. It's what they drive, it's what they like... respect that. I don't like some of the stuff they do to their cars, but you never hear me bashing them... I may laugh, but hey that's their taste, even if it's strange to me! oh well... i have way better things to worry about than what everyone else drives!

Attitude. That's what's been repeated again and again. That's the part that gets under people skin, be it from a domestic owner, an import owner, or an ATV owner.

As for me, if it's fast, I respect it. However, that doesn't mean that I like the way it looks. You could take a Pontiac Aztec and make it run 9's and I'll respect it. However, I'll still think it is one of the fugliest vehicles ever produced. Just the same way I never have liked the looks of the Mustang II's. It's just personal taste.

I like the looks of some imports. I even think some of the body-modified imports look nice. However, I don't like big table-size wings. I don't like neon. I don't like blackouts. I don't like clear tail lights. I don't like the little windshield wiper nozzle lights. I hate the little stem lights people put on their wheels. I don't like stickers all over cars (unless they are sponsor stickers in a sponsored vehicle). I HATE itty-bitty wheels with tiny little skinny tires which stick out 4 inches from the wheel well. I like loud stereos with good base, but I hate guys who drive by at 2 mph at 2:00 in the morning with their bass turned up load enough to shake apart a bank vault.

The bottom line is that each of us dislikes things for each of our own reasons. I can't tell you why I dislike some of the things I've mentioned. There's no science to it. However, I tend to lean towards functionality. If it has a REAL purpose on the car (like the Cobra R wings and air splitters...which I don't think are all that pretty), I can accept them. However, neon lights and flashy crap aint gonna help you one damned bit.

That being said, I'll go on to say this. "To each his own." If someone wants to modify your vehicle with the afformentioned propoganda, they should go right on and do it. It ain't gonna sink my ship. But if someone talks the talk, they'd better be able to walk the walk. And if you don't know what you're talking about, pardon my West-Texan, shut the hell up.

looks like the majority rules in favor of saying rice is an attitude. which IMO is absolutely correct. the reasons i hate rice is because of all the reasons stated before this post (maybe, i didn't read all of every post).

the biggest thing that bugs me about the "Ricer", is that it is all just a big fad. i don't know how or when it started, but it's obvious to me that more and more kids are getting into the Rice club because high-school aged kids are doing it to fit in with the others. it's a fad, much like the way 85% of the adults in America between the ages of 35 and 60 bought PT Cruisers and them and a million snotty high school and college-bound girls got daddy to buy them a new Beetle. I can't turn a corner in my little town with out seeing one of the two. and around the next corner is anything and everything non-domestic that's thumping with base and sounding like a 1600cc mosquito. THAT'S the biggest problem i have with rice. not only is it the attitude they have, but that they're just doing it because their friends are. why do you think when a 16 year old gets his/her first car, the very first thing they do with their first months wages working at Burger King is spent putting neons, rip-off chrome 14's, shiny windshield wipers, tint and cool-colored headlights on their ford escort or '91 Grand Am.

they only make themselves rice so they can turn heads. they don't really care if you like the car or not, they want attention because nobody likes them to begin with.

all valid points, to add somthing. rice is also negating the balance of design, function, and practicality . when the factory designers created the composite for the prototype to be mass produced, they chose several canditdates with one actually making it to final production. in terms of actual o.e sports car design, when the aspect of speed and aerodynamics come in play, the design from the factory is fairly close to being good. the designers created it for looks, aerodynamics, and handling ,giving them more rigid than comuter car suspensions, wider tires, high reving engines etc... they're built to move..from the moment of conception to the final assembly line, thats their only purpose, thats why they're uncomfortable to ride in as a 3'rd passenger, why they get crappy gas milage, why insurance on them is obscene for inexperianced novice owners, why you can't carry anything more than the size of a 25' tv in them, and why there expensive. but due to cost effective assembly practices the factory cuts corners in order to lower the cost/an lengthen the life of the car.. choking off exausts, high gear ratios, weakened materials, forged parts, limiting to tampering with o.e equpiment under warranty... they do it to keep the longevitiy of the car.
in closing the factory design is about 85-90% perfect in maintaning looks and practicality for aerodynamics.

when you ignore the factory's lines, you've stepped outside the realm of the artist's vision an are just pissing in the wind, mimicing other cars with similar mods; hoping you think you know what your doing is something better.. (unless you've got phd's in CAD, aerodynamics, physics, graphic design, and automobile body construction, go ahead I trust you already know what your doing an this is water under the bridge)

granted major mods require the refortification of the factory design. blowers, larger blocks, clearance issues require adding things to properly protect the internals.
wings ( high HP monsters hold that car to the ground an keep the power planted and the tires on the road.

its simple: Function over form is the name of the game
"rice" is an attitude
an ****** is an ******
be it honda, acura, ford, chevy, ferrarri, bentley. whatever
a lowrider is built for show, so is a stereo competition bass off car, a race car is built to haul ***. you can mix an match but have to compromise one for the other in places.

AMEN

I don't hate rice. I hate no one. After all, aren't we all God's children?

hehe....

bah, half that stuff is damn cool looking, half of it looks like trash (like using bondo and paper machee )...honestly i just dont like the people who take a $2,000 geo, add a few plastic parts to it and drive around like theyre the shizzle...gives me someone to laugh at, but it still kinda churns the stomach....ive complimented many import running around here in gatorville with wings, etc...because some of them are actually really decent...i think the only everyday (meaning its regular, you dont see many paper machee kits...lol) rice pet peeve i have are those fart cans....they sound like my dads yard equipment....i just wish i could make my 4.6L sound like a big block :\ (or get one!..hehe)

Very well said

I tend to agree with your post. If it's pulling juice from the alternator and not making you go fast you don't need it. But I also understand that people build cars for different reasons. Some people could care less how fast their car is and would rather go for looks, and I respect them for that. As long as they respect me for having a car that can blow thier doors off

I've seen some very well done imports around here with body kits and wings that look pretty good. I'm not real big on the aluminum wings with the twin blades, but I do like shorter aluminum pedestal wings which have been on the aftermarket shelves since I was in diapers. Basically I prefer seeing something different from the norm. Seeing Mustang after Mustang with a Saleen or Cobra wing does nothing for me. Same goes with the import scene. If it's different, and done in good taste I'll tend to like it more than seeing one that looks like everyone else's.

The reason I started this thread is I've seen a lot of rice bashing lately, and that's just something I don't get into. I try to look at someone's ride for what they see in it. Not for what I would do if it were my car. My dream car is a Mustang, theirs may be a Nissan. I can respect them for that, even though I am a die hard when it comes to buying American made products. By the way, anyone want to buy a set of FORD RACING tall polished aluminum valve covers? They were made in Taiwan!!!! Go figure.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's been interesting reading.

I hate ricers for the same reason I cringe when Rosanne Barr sings the national anthem: They are both too stupid to realize what complete and total fools they are making of themselves by pretending to be something that they not only aren't, but could never be.

Take care,

Have you ever gotten really, really, REALLY stoned, and had a bitchin idea that would be the coolest thing ever, but woke up the next day to find your favorite concert t-shirt, from 10 years ago, spray-painted and stuck to a piece of cardboard? Of course you haven't, but if you had, you never would have worn it out of the house, right?

Ricers not only wear it out of the house, they get little neon lights to put all over it so even the truly uninterested will be forced to see what a moron they really are.

Does that make it any clearer?

Take care,
~Chris

It's not as much the cars, as it is the ppl, I hate car posers! Notihing worse then a 17-18 sec car that looks like it the fastest thing in the world. I agree with looks, and uniqueness, but to put on a nonfuctional wing on a car that will never see over 100mph, whats the point? To join your other "peeps"?

I'm thinking of putting stripes on my car, but it's for looks that I like. My spoiler is 100% fuctional and is even stock. At about 70, I can fell the rear settle down, at 100, the rear leavels with the front, and this is a stock '79 spolier, so I don't need a 3 foot wing. Another thing is why even a wing on a front wheel drive car? SO that 100mph, the drive wheels come off the ground?!? I mean, WTF?!?

Some of the paint jobs they have are nice, but then there are those rainbow, look at me! look at me! ones. Can u say, my parents paid for this, but I want everyone to think it's all mine!!!

DAmn, I would keep going, but now I have to finish packing for my trip home, trust me, I have plenty more left for this post
