You know your from Texas, if......
You measure distance in hours.
You've had to switch from "heat" to A/C" in the same day. Stores don't have bags, they have sacks. Stores don't have shopping carts; they have buggies. You see a car running in the parking lot at the store with no one in it, no matter what time of the year. You use "fix" as a verb. Example: I am fixing to go to the store. All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, or animal. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. You carry jumper cables in your car .....for your OWN car. You know what "snipe hunting" is all about. You only own four spices: salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and salsa. You think everyone from a bigger city has an accent. You think sexy lingerie is a tee shirt and boxer shorts.------ OH YEAH!!! :-) The local paper covers national and international news on one page but requires six pages for high school sports. You think that the first day of deer season is a national holiday. You know which leaves make good toilet paper. You find 98 degrees F "a little warm." You know all four seasons: Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas. You know whether another Texan is from southern, middle, or northern Texas as soon as they open their mouth. There is a Dairy Queen in every town with a population of 1000 or more. Going to Wal-Mart is a favorite past-time known as "goin' wal-martin" or off to "Wally World." You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good chili weather. A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola, or pop. It's a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor.

TOO DAMN FUNNY!
THIS IS HYSTERICAL!
Distance in hours....is there ANY other way????? I ACUTALLY left Topless running today at the LiquorStore, cuz I knew if I turned it off my stereo might not come back on! I"m not 'fixin' to go to Wally World, I went there yesterday AND today! Whats even worse is leaving the GARAGE open. I now have a thing in my room that shows a red light when my garage door is open, i have a remote in there too, so i dont have to go downstairs to close it. Although, 4th of July Night, I left Topless in a driveway ALL NIGHT LONG W/ THE TOP DOWN! what was I thinking?????? At least I didn't leave the keys in it! High school sports ARE big here! AS IS Deer Season...Come November, there are ALOT of widows! It got up to 100* today! And it was a hot mofo. I actually had to take breaks working in the yard. Or be face down again! We have NO seasons! heheheh...ya, where I grew up in Friendswood and whereI work, there was only a DQ, RedTop, Pizza Hut and Scotties Fried Chicken. NOW there is about 5 different fast food places on EVERY CORNER!!!! The DQ is still there!!! I think for the hell of it, i'm gonna drive thru there and count how many ff places we have now. .....Im curious! EVERYTHING IS A COKE HERE.... Pop is what most peoples dads are. Soda, just sounds tooo wierd! TNT

This reminds me of something we always say around where I live. Since a LOT of ppl here work at Ford Motor Company (typically the stamping plant), they NEVER say, "I work at Ford." NO! They say, "I work at Ford's." Or if we have to go to the supermarket, it's not "Meijer," oh God no, it's "Meijer's!!!" AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

LOL. My father in law always said stuff like that. "I went to Safeway's Today." My wife and I catch him every time and ask why he says that, but of course he doesn't know. |

The only remnants of my New Jersey accent that I am aware of is with the word orange. Apparently I pronounce it ar-ange, or R-ange, rather than or-range. I dunno. That's what I'm told.
Take care, -Chris

Regionalisms
Regionalisms are always amusing.
How many people say 'down cellar' for basement as we do in New England? Depending where you live, a 'submarine' sandwich is called a Hogie, Hero, Grinder, Torpedo and sometimes a Poor Boy. I grew up in the New York City suburbs of Long Island and we always said we were 'Going to the city' when we meant Manhattan. Everyone knew exactly what city we meant. The 'Coke' thing changes depending where you are. In Boston and Northern New England, it's called 'tonic'. Then we have Soda and of course, Pop. In the northern New England states like Maine, when your not born there there you're : 'From Away'. No matter if 'away' is New York or China, it's all: 'Away'. New Englanders also like to substitute 'us' for 'me'; i.e. "Woodya make us a cuppa coffee?" New Jersey residents say they are going 'Down the shore' when they go to the beach. In CT, we just say we're 'Going to the water'. Tons more but you get the idea. I've been in many places and have heard them all. Some are confusing, some are just silly but they all make up what passes for 'American' in both language and the terms we use. Interesting stuff; keep 'em coming. |
