Default Smoke....

Whenever I'm driving and my RPM's start getting up toward 4,500-5,500 my car starts to smoke slighty (dark smoke). If not visible you can smell it.
Any ideas on what possible problems could be?
Thanks guys.

Dark (black) smoke is unburned fuel. If you're seeing it at WOT, I'd check your fuel pressure regulator.

Take care,

Yea, I agree with PKRWUD, sounds like it's running rich

Do you have an adjustable FPR? If so, it needs to be turned down a couple of PSI.

Hey guys... Appreciate the info. No it's not adjustable, so how would I go about checking it? I did get computer codes 181 and 189 yesterday stating it was running rich, good call.
So how do I fix it?
Thanks again,
Don

a few ways:

First get yourself a fuel pressure gauge. screww it into the fuel rail (they usually come with adapters)

start the engine and see what the pressure is at idle. It should be between 37-41 psi

pull the vacum tube off of the regulator and keep an eye on the pressure, it should go up, also check that you r getting vacum at that line. If it doesn't go up, then your regulator is shot. also, check to see if the pressure holds when you turn the engine off. It sounds like your FPR is no good, BUT hook a scanner up to it and get all of the error codes, and see if something else is cuasing it to run rich, ie. O2 sensor, map, or mass airflow.

Good luck
