Default Door Handle Replacement

All:

The passenger side door handle on my 1989 Mustang LX convertible is broken. One side of the handle broke and now the door can only be opened by carefully pulling up on the side of the handle that's still intact.

Does anyone know how much work is involved in replacing this? I've seen on some auto parts websites that I can buy the handle all by itself or the entire door handle assembly. Do I need the whole assembly or will the door handle itself be sufficient. (I know you'd almost have to see the car to determine this, but if the replacement of the handle is easy, then I'm going to try that before shelling out the big bucks for the whole assembly.)

You can buy a replacement metal door handle instead of the cheesy plastic one from many companies. I bought one for the driver's side door on my car, it was like $20 and all you have to do is pull off the door interior panel (take out a few screws, pull off), then you drill out the old rivets, put the handle in place, acquire a rivet gun (can buy one for cheap or rent one) and rivet the new one in place. There is only one rod connected to the handle so it's super easy to replace.
Good luck.
