AFR or TF heads???
I am stuck between the AFR heads and TF heads. I will be going with the TF-R intake. Do they make the AFR 185's to fit the 302 block? They say they are desigened for the 351W...
If I were to choose the TF heads, should I go with the Twisted wedge or track heat heads?? This car is only driven about once a week. Are you going to have any porting work done? If not go with the AFR's They flow a better. I am not sure they will fit on the 302 But I think they would Call them up to be sure.

I don't know, the flow numbers that I have show that the AFR's flow much better. I think when it comes time for me to purchase heads I'm going to have the same problem.

185's will fit a 302.
Regarding the 165 vs. Twisted Wedge debate: The 165's flow a little better out of the box, but if you want more down the line, the Twisted Wedge head provides more room for growth. IMO (and you know what they say about opinions) I wouldn't spend the $1295 on AFR's when I can get a set of Twisted Wedge heads for $920 from JD's performance. A lot of people want to cry about the price of the stud mount rockers and hardened pushrods you have to buy to go along with the TW heads, but who the heck is going to dump a grand into a set of heads and not buy a set of quality pushrods and roller rockers anyway? That would be plain stupid IMO. So...my .02 is go with the twisted wedge heads. ------------------ 1989 LX 5.0 Coupe 13.30's @ 106.7 while doing the aod shuffle...needs gear and converter. 1992 LX 5.0 Convertible Moderator SN95.com, Stangtec.com |

So what are the advantages of Twisted Wedge over the Track heat heads??
Will I have any flycutting with the TF heads? I will have the heads ported and polished along with the intake to match.. ------------------ 347 Stroker Motor: Balanced, Cobra Transmission, Extrude Ported and Polished Upper and ported Lower, GT40 Milled Ported and Polished Heads, B303 Cam, BBK 1 5/8 Headers, 30lb Bosch Injectors, Holley AFPR, March Underdrive Pulleys, Perma-Cool Fan, 3-Core Radiator, Accel Performance Coil, Accel 300+ Racing Wires, Ram Air, K&N Filter, 73mm Vortech MAF, 70mm TB, FlowMaster Exhaust w/BBK Offroad H-Pipe, Hurst Shifter, 3:55 Gears, Ram Clutch, Cross Drilled Rotors, AC and Smog del, rear seat del. I have spoken to AFR in the past week. I'm going with 165's though my future plans are for a stroker motor. The tech said 165's will provide great bottom and mid range even on a 347 inch engine. Obviously, the 185's flow more on the big end. The 165's and 185'ds have identical exhaust ports and flow numbers. It's only the intake runners that are different. The tech said the 185's require flycutting on the 302, so something to consider there. I think I'm going with 165's, and edelbrock performer intake, and I haven't picked a cam yet. I want to see how they work on another car so if you get em, please post!

I've got the AFR 185's going a 347 with a Vic 5.0 intake. The heads need to be opened up to work with the intake. The 205's would probably work with little or no port matching?
IMO since you've got a 347 I'd go with the 185's since its a tick under a 351. beyond a bit more stroke on the crank and a longer rod, your essentially dealing with a similar sized engine and with the lower R/S ratio, the 347 can use a bit more port anyhow. Orignially I had planned going with an Edelbrock Performer RPM(EFI)with the AFR 185's and 1-3/4 long tubes on an 11:1 347 with no power adder. So I contacted Comp Cams about a hydraulic roller making 400+ hp they cam back with this reccomendation (I even asked for a custom roller if need be). Nitrous HP hydraulic roller (cam part #: 35-560-8; cam grind #: NX282HR; duration: 232/244 @ .050; LSA: 114) Here's a link to AFRS dyno tested combo page http://www.airflowresearch.com/ford_dyno.htm hope that helps BTW, the AFR 185's have 1/2 bolt holes vs. the 7/16 holes for the 165's. ARP sells head studs with hardened washers specifically for installing 351 heads on a 302 [This message has been edited by MiracleMax (edited 10-09-2001).] |

I would go with the tf heads out of the two that you are choosing from. They are less money, and now have a solid reputation.
If this was my car I would be looking at the Victor jr's or Canfields though. ------------------ 79 hatch w/ NA 347,stage 2 Canfield heads, out of the box Victor 5.0 intake, solid roller cam, Aeromotive fuel system, proshifted TKO II.MY CAR http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/...splay.cgi?1288 93lx all stock + tremec |

The only difference between Twisted wedge and Track heat is that the heat has no emissions provisions, and stronger springs. I run the track heats and love them, Trick Flow really stands behind them. They email an answer to any questions I have had. You will probably have to check with them about those heads fitting without flycutting. Know your piston and cam info.

havent seen killercanary around so I'll post
his site http://www.angelfire.com/pa2/killercanary/ I like my AFR's alot...I got them because they have good flow numbers under the max lift.. which helps my mild setup alot.. if you go TW, make sure you get pistons to match the heads...either way, make sure to check piston to valve clearance... it only takes a few minutes, better safe than broke ;-) ------------------ 84 convt,'95 302,AFR's, performer 3.55's, underdrives BBK shorties stock cam, 1.7's 13.85@102.5 and a '68 stang that WAS nasty ;-) |

I'd go w/ the TFS tracks if I were you. I agree w/ Nic, the AFR's flow slightly better, but not enough IMO to shell out the extra $300. I like my Edelbrock Performers, but if I had to do it again, I'd match up my TFS intake w/ a TFS set of heads.

I am really confused on which to purchase!
I think I might throw on a set of TF heads and a TF TH intake, custom cam, and keep it at that! ------------------ 347 Stroker Motor: Balanced, Cobra Transmission, Extrude Ported and Polished Upper and ported Lower, GT40 Milled Ported and Polished Heads, B303 Cam, BBK 1 5/8 Headers, 30lb Bosch Injectors, Holley AFPR, March Underdrive Pulleys, Perma-Cool Fan, 3-Core Radiator, Accel Performance Coil, Accel 300+ Racing Wires, Ram Air, K&N Filter, 73mm Vortech MAF, 70mm TB, FlowMaster Exhaust w/BBK Offroad H-Pipe, Hurst Shifter, 3:55 Gears, Ram Clutch, Cross Drilled Rotors, AC and Smog del, rear seat del. |
