serpentine belt on '74 engine
Would it be possible for me to bolt a serpentine belt set up on my '74 351w
I guess I might have to put some of this smog shit on my engine to keep the DOT assholes happy.

Hey man, I have the sepentine belt on my '74 windsor. The only thing I am running is the water pump and alternator though. I used to run the p/s. The belt I am using now is a 475k6. Which is a 47.5" belt, 6 rib. You can get at any parts store. If you want to run P/S, get a 735 k6 belt. I also have reversed my belt tensioner. If you are not using a/c, you will want to do this as well. It is very easy to do. What kind of harmonic balancer are you using? Is it the actual one that came with that motor? The easiest way to tell is if it has 4 bolts for the crank pulley. I had the stock 351w balancer on mine before I switched to the fluidamper. If you have this, just put on your old crank pulley (from the 5.0) And use the other pulleys from the 5.0 as well. But you will have to get a new water pump. Because it is a reverse rotation water pump. Oh yeah, the alt. bracket from the 5.0 works great.

I have the stock damper. Pa. says I must have original smog crap installed for inspection. It's the only way I know of to bolt a smog pump on an older engine.
Will I need anything else? Can I use my 351w alternator. I hope cause it's an aftermarket unit from powerhouse.

Nope...no a/c I should be good to go then.
My aftermarket alternator is a POWERMASTER 100amp unit. It's a one wire hook up. A #4 wire runs from the alt. to the battery...that's it. In the past I had trouble with the charging system so I ditched the external regulator and bought this unit...problem solved!! That's why I want to keep my alternator.

I understood that you have a powermaster alternator. I should have said as long as the case is the same size as the stock alternators. I assume that it is and you used the same alt. bracket. Sorry I did not clear that up. You need to find out if the one you have will accept a serpentine pulley. I have seen some v belt alternators that would not take a serpentine pulley. I have never seen a powermaster unit in hands so I don't know. I would think so.

Yes, the powermaster alt. does accept a serpentine pulley because it came with both types of pulleys. Lucky me...I still have the serpentine pulley for it!
