Default help with intake manifold...

HeyI just got an origional 4v intake manifold for my 71 351C. My car origionally had the 2v intake and heads, but I am trying to upgrade to the 4V setup.

My question is will the 4V intake match up with my 2V heads? Or will I run into problems? I can get the factory 4V heads for 30 but they are jst the heads, no valves or anything. Im trying to do tis cheaply for now untill I decide what I want to do finally.

Most manifold companys make 4v intakes for 2v heads. Check the catologs or web sites and you will see them listed that way.

to use a 4v intake, you need 4v heads.... for 2v intake you need 2v heads... if you didnt there would be no 4v and 2v.... they would be the same...

edelbrock and weiand sell their own aluminum intake manifolds for the cleveland... 2v and 4v.... they are 4 barrel replacement intakes. the aluminum intakes will also save ya some weight over the origional cast iron .....

i am gunna buy my new 4 barrel intake and 600 cfm edelbrock for my car soon.. gotta cash some checks first.... lol

Same goes with headers.... if you have 4v heads.. MAKE SURE U GET 4v parts, and if you have 2v heads MAKE SURE YOU GET 2v parts... lol i have been told that many times... my turn to spread the knowledge...

P.S.: did i spell "knowledge" right????

What metal said

The 4v ports are huge in comparison to the 2v ports so using a 4v manifold with the 2v heads will probably only hurt your performance since there will be massive port mismatch. As the above have said, either get an aftermarket intake (proformer or something like it) for use with the 2v heads, or get the 4v heads. If you go the 4v head route, be ready for very poor low end torque, but great upper rpm flow.

thats kinda what I thought, but thanks for clearing it up.

Hey metal, I thought you would have your intake and carb by now. Careful or I might get mine first!

I gotta cash some checks and hope i have enough money hehe. And also convince my parents to let me use their credit card or however i pay for the stuff.. i dunno, im only 16 lol.

I was lookin at the Edelbrock intake, buyin it from jegs instead of summit, cause jegs includes the instalation kit... totaling about 202 bucks. To buy everything thats inluded with jegs, from summit it is like 230 bucks. And i also gotta buy new ARP fasteners.

Oh and im thinkin i will buy the Edelbrock Remanufactured carb to save some money and not have to tune it. Anybody have trouble with em, and should i just buy a new one? Im lookin to save money anywhere i can.

My expierence with edelbrock carbs has not been good they do not have a proper vacumn port to work with the stock fdord distributor the problem being that their "timed" vacumn port only flashes vacumn at it for roughly a second after going to WOT instead of sustaining vacumn at WOT like the factory distributor was designed for. Thus reqireing a "real" mechanical advance built into the distrubutor. unfortunatley fact. ford dis. only have a few degrees of mech. advcance built into them the rest is all vacumn.

secondly this has nothing to do with which brand per se' but my expierince with clevlands has been because of there heads and rev ability work best with a 700cfm or better IMHO 600 is actually only another 100 cfm off of the stock 2v and is to restrictive. I recomend a 750 Holley if it were me if you want the Ede carb go up to 800 to get the same performance out of it that you would a 750 holley. I have found most Ede need an extra 50 cfm rating to make the same power as the same motor with a Holley on it.

so shaggy, is there a whole lot more for me to do, rather than just removing the old stuff, and putting on the new? What kinda tricky stuff with the distributor will i have to do? And do i have to buy "Ford kickdown linkage" separate for the edelbrock carb???

Im probably gunna need some help with this lol

My recomendation is if you want the edelbrock carb then be prepared to buy a good mechanical andvance distributor in the future it will run on the stock distributor it just won't alloe proper ignition advance.

Yes you will need the kickdown lickage thing they make for fords or convert to a cable kickdown either way more money spent.

Overall my recomendation is to buy a holley but each person has their prefrence.

PS if you are buying from summit and looking for a deal then talk to the phone order guy about there intake and carb deals they sell but don't advertise anymore a carb intake and aircleaner package for a lot less then buying all of it together they oackage them themselves and the only drawback in the way you are talking is it comes with a holley instead of a ede.

pss i live at sea level and for day to day driving the jetting that comes in the holley as always been almost right on. (little rich in summer and little lean in winter but never enough one way or another to hurt a motor just enough to not get the very best et i could)

Hey all you guys seem to be right on. But, since I just put together a monster 351 I'll add my 2cents. The 4v manifold will bolt up to 2v heads, DONT DO IT, he's right the performance will go out the window. Puddles of unburned fuel on the manifold floor and stuff like that. 4v heads for $30 that is cheep, make sure they are 351 heads and not 400"s. Also if your buying 4v heads go for the closed chamber ones. As long as we're dreaming hear have them machined to run screw in studs, adjustable valve trains are nice. Install a mech cam and you've got a BOSS351.
As far as intakes 2v heads go with something like a performer, or a Weiand stealth. I'm running 4v heads so I went with the Weiand Excelerator, this things revs like there will be no tomorrow! To help the low end torque , with the 4v heads use port plates. They cut down the intake port size enough to bring the intake charge velocity to respectful levels. Those with the long runners of the manifold make quiet a package.
I put a 700 holley carb up top, with 750 booster ventri, and shooters. Havent put it on a dyno yet but cant wait!

Default dominator

Check around and see if you can find a holley strip dominator. I currently have one on my clevlend and I like it. Alot of new manifolds cant touch the dominator. Cross your fingers holley is take about bringing it back.
