Mass air sensor
What is the correct step for checking the Mass air sensor. My car is falling on it face at 3/4 throttle, but runs fine below 3/4 throttle

MAF testing
Do a code scan.
Look for 26 (bad MAF) or possibly 56 or 66 (MAF too high or too low). There are other tests but you need more sophisticated equipment. If it throws a MAF code, replace the sensor. Meanwhile, a careful cleaning of the MAF hotwire (disconnect battery first, let the wire cool and use a Q-tip moistened with alcohol to clean it, being very gentle) may help, if it's at all contaminated. |

Its probably not your MAF as it does not read throttle position, only the mass of air that is flowing into the engine. Have you checked your TPS?

actually, the mass air and the tps work together. i have had mass airs go bad on 3 of my mustangs, and 3 of my buddys stangs. that was the problem with all of them. actually just fixed one yesterday on a 92lx, the car wouldnt get out of its own way, then when we replaced the mass air, it screamed like a 12 yr. old at a backstreet boys concert.

MAF testing
Kenneth:
I recommended replacing the MAF sensor as the quick and easy way of resolving the problem but of course it's expensive. I assume you've already checked the TPS voltage for a steady climb as you open the throttle to max (engine off) and it's normal, right? If so, put the MAF put on a tester and check the current output. In the case of a failed MAF sensor, the computer (ECM) will go to a backup strategy, using the TPS signal to create a MAF signal of its own. That's why you need a full array of test equipment to check all aspects of the MAF/TPS operation. A good shop will have this equipment and know how to use it. It shouldn't cost too much (under $75.) to have it done. There's a good chance the MAF sensor is defective but of course I have no way to guarantee that it is. Just making semi-educated guesses, from a distance, without any equipment and trying to at least point you in the right direction. |
