![]() The 28-spline 8.8" Ford Auburn and Eaton differentials are $350 and up. What shop or mail order company sells a limited slip for around $250? How much does the Ford Traction-Lok cost and where can I find one for $250?

![]() If you've already got an 8.8 in the car, you might consider a rebuild kit. They run around $50. I changed the clutch & plate configuration in mine and tightened it up .022" and it works better than new. I get both tires gripping everytime now.
Just my $.02 |

![]() What is the 0.022" you are talking about and how to you check it? I just put a rebuild kit in my rearend and I just installed the same thickness shims. I'll set mine up the same as you if you tell me how.
Thanks, Eddie

![]() I don't know the part # off the top of my head, but I'll look it up when I get home.
I knew I should've took some pics before I put it back together. When I reassembled the clutch pack, I put a spacer between each clutch. I think the factory setup is 3 clutches and 4 spacers with 2 of the spacers back-to-back or maybe 2 of the clutches were back-to-back. I really don't recall. Anyway, I put a 4th clutch between the back-to-back spacers and used less shim on the outer end. I used the measurements from the rebuild kit and assumed that the factory pieces were that size when they were new. I don't recall if the factory outer shim was stamped or if I had to measure it. The shims in the rebuild kit are all marked. .022" I believe was the over all improvement. The tighter you can make it the better. That was as tight as I could get it and still put it back together. If I had a mounted vice, I think I could've snuck another .005" on each side. Maybe next time. |

![]() Here's the part # if you still need it:
From page 97 of the 2002 Ford racing catalog--> M-4204-F288 This is the 8.8, 28-spline, Traction-Lok. The number at the Ford parts counter may not be the same unless they're an SVT dealer. |

![]() I got a picture of the factory setup but I can't get it to load, so I'll do my best in text.
Here's how the factory setup is: c=clutch s=spacer sh=shim spider gear-->C/ S / S /C/ S / S /C/.035"shim (your shim size may differ) Here's how I put mine back together: spider gear-->C/ S /C/ S /C/ S /C/.035" shim Total measure of the factory setup is .655" on each side. Total measure of my setup is .675" on each side. Which is to say that I tightened up each side by .020" over the factory specs. Since my clutches were worn so bad I actually went .032 (on each side) over the tired clutchpack that was in there. (Remeasured the old clutches this evening) I tried a .040" shim, but I couldn't get it together so I settled for the .035". I've also got 1 extra clutch and 1 less spacer. Try it with the thickest shim you can get in there and work you way down 'til you get the assembly to roll back into the carrier. Good luck dude. E-mail me if you have anymore ??? BTW: The Ford rebuild kit only comes with 6 clutches. You need to get an extra kit unless you can find the clutches separately. |
