View Full Version : Lost My Oil Pump today....

yep, going down I-35 at 70+ mph. I'm not sure how far I went before I heard the clattering, maybe several miles. I killed it and pulled off the highway.

Pulling the distributor told me all I needed to know....the top part of the oil pump drive shaft came out with it--my chrome moly HD oil pump drive shaft! The oil pump must have locked up to cause this....or it was a defective shaft.

Either way, I probably scored the bearings. I'll tear the pan off in the morning and see what is up. I'm bummed. Maybe there won't be too much metal down there.

I-35 is not the place for something like that to happen to you, either. When I first got my most recent 65, I locked up the brakes on 635 in Garland and did a 180 in one of the middle lanes. Even though traffic was tight, I never touched anybody. Ever seen a grown man cry? I was scared (still sitting in the middle of 635 FACING 60+ traffic), saddened (that something like this could happen to me), and happy (that nobody had to die that day) all at the same time. I know this had nothing to do with your oil pump, but I just had to relate to the 'breakdown in Dallas' thought.

ok, I dropped the pan yesterday and the pump was frozen. I don't know how, I guess I'll tear downt the pump later and see if I can tell what happened.

The good news is that I can't find any metal in the oil pan. I wiped it down and couldn't see any metal suspended in the oil.

I'll put it back together tonight and prime the pump.

Oh, and luvmystang.....I've been there in an 85 Chrysler....really gets your heart pounding when the car starts spinning and your not sure what going to happen next.

FOUND IT!! The oil pump was locked up, and when I took it apart, I noticed a gauge in the metal, after digging around inside the pump body, I found a piece of metal.

The object is about a quarter of an inch long, and just about as big around as a paper clip. It looks just like a quarter of an inch of paper clip wire.

What it came from inside my engine I can't imagine. The ONLY thing I can even think of is the retaining clip on top of the lifters.

Could be a foriegn object dropped in the engine while it was apart? Maybe the last time I did the heads....

Anyway, I primed it and started it. Seems to be ok. Whew. Not ready yet for new short block $$$.

Now I can turn my attention to hooking up that fuel injection.

Man, I am so sorry to hear about your engine. I know you have a really sweet ride and it must have really put a pit in your stomach. But glad to hear it is in good shape and hope she runs great.

Thanks thunderbolt, the car is fine. I feel very fortunate about this, I could be looking for the best price on a shortblock today. The old stang is back on the road and showing no signs of ever having suffered a pump-attack. http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/wink.gif
