Post Getting power from carb, & MSD coil????

Hey guys,

Well, i know my carb (holley 600cfm 4bbl) is WAY out of wack, it needs some tunning, but since im getting that done, i want to get it tuned for some aggresive driving, since it was put on, the guy that did it for us didnt do any tunning, he said it didnt need it, but i know it did, it ran ok, so i didnt really say anything, did it for free anyways.

Well, now it needs tunning and im sure a possible rebuild and wanted to know what to ask for when i show up. I heard some stuff about changing the ports or barrels or something like that will give me a lot more power? Also, what should i expect to pay, i wont have much time to shop around so what would be a good amount for a tunning/port change, and that price with a rebuild on top of that?

Oh Also, i bought an MSD blaster 3 coil, knowing its for msd ignition, and was wondering what it would do with my stock ignition, would it burn stuff up?

Thanks guys

To be honest, I would just go with a stock rebuild. Unless you have a radical motor, changing the jet size won't give you any noticeable power. There are all kinds of little tricks to mess with but a stock 600 cfm carb with that 289 should be plenty. The MSD coil shouldn't burn up anything. I ran an accel super coil with my old points distributor before my msd and it worked fine.
You may get a different opinion about the carb as there is always arguments about carb size and tuning but a fresh rebuild will probably do wonders alone without trying to trick it out or anything. Just my $.02

I agree with David; go for a stock rebuild. 600 cfm is plenty for your engine and modifications to the carb could make future carb tuning a nightmare with no real benefit.

The MSD coil is fine; I used one on a Chevy 350 with a points-equipped distributor and never had a problem but you may need to replace the points more often. I did.

As far as having it rebuilt, go here:
http://www.circletrackcarbs.com/

and go to the contact page and email Rich. Tell him what you have and what you want, and he'll help you out. He is the very best that I have ever met, and his prices are more than fair. He builds race carbs and restores carbs. When he's done, it will look and run better than new. He will make minor changes to optimize it for you. Tell him I sent you, and he'll give you a good deal.

Take care,
-Chris

Thanks guys,

im hoping that msd coil will work fine, im gonna put it on tonight. Im going to wait for the rebuild on the carb, im gonna pick up an intake manifold tonight as well, i figure i should get good air flow 1st to raise the bar on the rebuild. That and put some windsor heads on my 289. real cheap on ebay.

Chris---
thanks for that information, when im ready for the rebuild i will send him an email.

thanks---
