I was on my home feeling sassy when I spot an olive green Eagle Talon ESi with HKS and other racing stickers all over it. We lined up at the lights and buddy would not look over at me and started out from the lights like super slow. I tried 2 more to get him to race, but he jsut wouldn't.
What in the hell is a Talon ESi http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/confused.gif? It said 16 valve DOHC on the door. I thought that the TSi was the Turbo version and the ES was just a plain 4 banger?
I assume that he was just another ricer with turbo stickers on the car, because a turbo talon (especially with an aftermarket turbo) should atleast be able to give me a run for the money. This guy was totally not going to race. He wasn't even an old guy.
Geez!

1. TSI AWD - Turbo AWD 195HP (high 14-low 15)
2. TSI - Turbo FWD 195 HP (stock mid 15)
3. ESI - N/A FWD 140 HP (mid 16)
4. DL - 110 HP? **** Slow!

No wonder he didn't want to go. The guy probably just had all those stickers on the car to show off. Oh well, It would have been fun to hand him his a$$.

Beware the TSi AWD. There are some that have been tweaked and that run 12s in the 1/4mi.
I read of one in Central Fl that used to eat up Mustangs. No stickers but a lot of boost.

definitely watch the TSi AWD, i've driven one and they got some balls that could give ya a run if your not careful. Go at 'em all though, most are like the one you spoke of....

check out www.turbotrix.com (http://www.turbotrix.com) for some sweet daily driven talon's. Keith's car runs 11.6 on a bone stock motor with a turbo upgrade. Utter silliness. the owner's car runs 10.7s and is full interior, street driven car.

Ya those Talons are mean machines if they are the authentic TSi AWD. I thought about buying one before I go the stang, but a $35,000+ Canadian price tag was far too much. They are nice cars, though I've heard of many tranny and clutch problems.

I used to own a 1990 TSI (aka older ones). They come with 11-11.5 PSI out of the box.
The pre 93 have tranny problems. After that they received upgraded trannies. I had to replace the clutch on mine, after everything it cost $915 Canadian or $600 US. OUCHHH!

Actually I used to have a TSI AWD and stock best time I pulled was 15.1.
The ESI is a piece of garbage; My winter beater is an 1996 Hyundai Accent, and I almost beat one on a light to light race.
They probably shoot in the 18s.
Front wheel Drive TSI's are .1 second faster stock on the 1/4 mile and about 3-4MPH more at the end.
Less traction yes, but a lot less weight too.
That was my .02.

the talon/eclipe awd's are unbelievable to be in at launch, all four claws tryin to grab the cement. I have a '99 GS-T with larger turbo, full exhaust, air/fuel controller, all the goodies, soon to come a front mount intercooler. my car will run 12's no problem, low 12's with slicks. I am still a devoted mustang lover, but I do love my eclipse. To each their own.

QuikTurbo, your damn right the AWD is mind blowing on first gear. You don't know how many sunglasses I have lost on the back windows sill. But seriously, I went through 4 transmissions and 3 clutches (not count all the rest of the crap) in a 30 month lease.
Think about this my stock AWD TSI ran 0-60MPH in 6.4sec.
My new STOCK mustang GT runs that same 0-60 in 5.4sec.
The TSI AWD has no guts after launch (stock)
BTW, Joey one of my (and Try Me) good buddies would probably appreciate your ride more than anyone here. He has a 1997 Eclipse GST and managed to hit 14.6 this year (he was pretty happy about that).
In Ottawa, there is this guy with a TSI AWD that runs 12s. His name is Pat Chang and license plate says V8KILR. You don't ***** around with that SOB. Nice guy though.
People look nasty in the states, attitude and crap. You guys should some up here this summer. Everybody. imports, V8, 911, Cudas, we all hag out and race together.

hey Lizard,
I have been pondering the thought of three cars to add to my collection. I am either going to buy a supra, was in a slightly modded one and almost crapped myself http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/smile.gif, a 2000 cobra. I am also going to find a notchback to mod heavily!!! That would be a great road trip to your town. My buddies GSX that has a fmic and the same mods as me ran a 12.2 et. his car is nuts.

yeah any 5 speed awd talon or eclipe can be made very fast, for a very small amount of money. fwd are a bit quicker from a roll but from a stop a moded awd dsm is very impressive;)

Isn't a Dodge Stealth and Mitsubishi 3000GT a DSM?

No not really.. the only dsm are eclipse/talon/laser and Galant VR4 the turbo model of all these cars run the 4G63. i do have to add i have raced my share of stangs, and the few owners that dont know about dsm's were dumbfounded and thought i was spraying.

I didn't realize there was a known problem with the tranny's in these cars. I had a stock '91 Talon TSI AWD in college. It was a fun car, and zippy, but it couldn't hang with the big boys. The gas mileage couldn't be beat ( I avg'd 28 mpg in the Talon, but I could barely get 19 in the T/A, the stang gets about 23 hwy)
The tranny died at 115,000 miles. The turbo died at 150,000.

Although I've only heard from people on this board about the transmission. I have known a few guys who went through clutches left, right and centre. At first I just thought they could not drive, but after the second clutch, I figured, must be a quality/design issue.
You'd think an aftermarket clutch would be the way to go, unless the aftermarket sucked too...

Or, it could be the fact that four wheels grip a lot better than two.
More grip means less slip, and a lot more driveline stress when you dump 400 angry, turbocharged horse power spinning at 6000rpm through every square inch of rubber on the ground. When neither end of the driveline equasion is willing to give an inch, the player who draws the short end of the stick is, unfortunatly, Mr.Clutch. So it will wear very quickly when abused.
Do take note though: A properly driven, stock, TSi AWD, will more than happilly putter around on the stock clutch for a long, long way.
But when you start upping the power, and dumping the clutch for those famous AWD launches, well, the stock clutch just won't cut it. Even aftermarket clutches will break down faster than usual. But its actually a good thing to let your clutch take most of the stress. He can be replaced pretty easilly, whereas a blown tranny, a warped crank, snapped shaft, or detonated differential... well, that tends to be more costly and time consuming. Its just that, DSMs were never meant to take 400hp+ AWD launches. They weren't designed for that kind of stress (though the wonderful thing about them is that they can create it, and survive it for quite a while). So thats why they may seem to have so many "driveline issues".
Two overpowered rear wheels will happilly transform themselves into billowing clouds of smoke... but when you try to overpower four wheels, the demand on that far more complicated driveline will increase by a great degree.
Yes, its a hassle, but its something you learn to live with. The amazed look on other vehicles owners' faces is a pretty handy coping mechanism too. ;)
Peace

Just to get off of the beaten path a bit....... A car to look out for is the 87 Dodge glhs turbo. These cars are very light 2400lbs and with a little tweaking will kick but. They ran 14 seconds from the factory and with mods can easily reach the 11's. I had one It was my 1st car. My neighbor raced road circuits for Shelby and gave me all kinds of free mods. Mine was very fast and smoked my friends M3 with a turbo BAD. I still to this day like that little car and wish I still had it to drive to work.

I had a good buddy in High school that one a car like that. He'd smoke 350 Camaros all day, it was funny. Had several reliability issues though :(. But it was a fun little car!
this is not cbring

maybe the guy just didn't want to race you. maybe he had his mind on something, maybe he wasn't running right, maybe he was low on gas, maybe he had a headache, maybe he had groceries in the car, maybe he was trying to get his goldfish home safely, etc, etc, etc..........
maybe he realized that street racing isn't legal.

if thats the case then he should have looked over and told the guy that he cant go. i hate when the people dont even look over at you when they know they drive a pretty quick car and you drive a quick car. whats the point of having a fast car if you dont play around a little bit. (besides going to the track) grant it street racing is illegal but i know i wont go above a certain speed if we're around a busy part of town.
