By 1979 we were at about the worst of the smog era engines. I had a 1975 Granada with a 351 W. Mine came witha 2 barrel, had an EGR valve, smog (air) pump and small valves in the heads. I think these valves were 1.72/ 1.45 , but don't quote me on this. Compression ratio was about 8/1. This produced about 165 hp @ 4000 and 276 lb/ft at 2000. Not exactly what one would call a high performance engine. With the right mods , a 351 W can be made to produce lots of power. Just look at the Ford crate engine with 385 hp.
