650 DP Holley Carb on 390
Hey everyone... got a question that I hope someone can help me out with. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif My 650 Double Pumper Holley Carb is on the fritz. It floods and the floats stick. What I want to know is why a 1 year old carb would do this? The car is very well taken care of and neglect is not a factor. So can someone tell me what the problem might be?
Thanks http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif ------------------ Jodi AKA PonyGirl Red 68 GT Fastback and Black 99 GT Coupe "Not your average Mustangs..." http://hometown.aol.com/redlilpony/Homepage.html |
The problem is that it's a "Holley." I had that problem with 2 of them before they ended up in the trash. Brand new ones too. I went with an Edelbrock. Never did find out what was wrong with them. Something to do with the vacuum secondary.
|
If it does it all of a sudden I would lean toward Dirt in the fuel bowl. Or maybe a bad needle and seat.
I would throw it away and get an Elderbrock. Easier to use and lasts longer. |
I disagree with the others. Could trash be entring from the tank and sticking in the needle and seats? That would cause that prob lem with any carb. This happened with me and after an in-line filter was installed, guess what? No more problem. Somehow, trash is entering your carb. At least, that's what my problem was. No brand of carb will correct that.

well i have an edelbrock 600 on my 302 and its a piece of crap, it doesnt want to start when it sits for 15 ro 20 min when its hot, i can never get it set right, if i have to buy another one its gonna be either a demon or a holley avenger series carb

Let me just give you a nice and warm "Good Luck" If you plan on switching over because if you can't tune an edelbrock carburator your in some hot water with the holley.

the needle valve has got some dirt in it.. get a new filter, replace the needle and seat
set the float level and you should be fine.. no need to tear it apart ;-) are you running an inline filter? ------------------ 84 convt,'95 302,AFR's, performer 3.55's, underdrives stock shorties stock cam, 1.7's 14.16@100.08, 255RWHP on a hot day 265 on the mph/weight chart |
So what was the problem?? I'm curious to know.

I'll be waiting to hear from you. Now if I could just find a girl that knows something about cars and doesn't go off with my best friend the world would be a better place for me.

a girl who can do carb work. I am seriously impressed. I would think that it is just like every one else thought, probably some gunk in the needle, or i had a problem i with my inline filter. I dont know what kind of filter they put on 68's but if it is the same little POS that was on my 66', then you will need to upgrade to a much larger one. That fixed all my carb troubles. Sorry to here bout your girl and your buddy FOSTANG.

I had the same problems with the carbs on my El Camino and my Mustang. Take the sight screws off from the side, the one (primary or secondary) that a lot of gas runs out of will be the side with the trash. You can take the needle and seat out, hit it with a shot of carb cleaner and reinstall it. Takes about 15 minutes, and I'm slow. The fix was an additional fuel filter added before the fuel pump (in addition to the one that was already downstream from the pump.
Good luck |
