Question what alterations to adapt a 302 on 65 Mustang

I have a 302 V8 from A 79 Ford Fairmont futura which I am installing to my 65 Mustang.I have replace the front sump oil pan, motor mounts and the water pump to fit ont the 65. A person told me I had to replace the timing chain covers in oder to make it fit. Does it require that timing chain coer to be removed? if so why?. What other modifications do I need to make it fit and operate properly on this car. This engine is equiped with electronic distributor, but I was thinking of changing it to a regular point type distrbutor and putting a Petronix system on it in order to avoid altering the original wiring conections. Any advise gentlemen?

Does anyone know or have have have any sites of stock or performance enigines of 64-66 Mustangs. I would gladly like to see your engine shots.

Thanks
appreciate any respenses.

I think (?) the timing chain cover does have to be swapped if the water pump is swapped. But I am not real sure about it. I would leave the duraspark ignition off the 79 right there and use it instead of something new unless you are really worried about original looking components. It is better than stock for 65.

The water pump thing.....I just went through this with mine a month ago. For some reason there is a diff style of pump form these years. But, if your pump is like mine (1965 289 hipo style), you do have to switch the cover also. I have a 74 302 with a 65 cover and pump. You need to look at your pump....if there are only the bolts around the perimeter of the pump....you need the 65 or so timing chain cover. The later models had two extra bolts placed in towards the actual pump (one right next to a water passage on each side of the pump.
As for clearance......why not go with the style off of your motor (79)....it shouldn't be any closer to the radiator.
Hope all this helps....if you have any more ques.....I have the same swap pretty much...feel free to ask.

Thanks gentlemen for the responses. Today I bought the oil pan and the timing cover. I had to buy the timing cover because of the the oil dip stick that is buit-in to it.
Rwhite65, did you change the harmonic balancer and the pully for your 302? Do I need to change the harmonic balancer since I changed the timing cover. What else do I need to "Jimmy Rig" this engine in order to make it work and fit on my 65. Did you use the same electronic distributor for your 302. If so where or how can I find out what wires go where when installing the electronic module? Thanks

The Harmonic Balancer will be the same....Be careful with the timing cover and waterpump due to the timing marks and the outlet from the waterpump...I have a 66 with a 302 and had problems with the lower radiator hose.
Hope this helps you.

I agree with the balancers being the same.
I happen to have a 65 on mine....but that is just to help my motor have a 289 look (not sure if they look different or not). Anyway...as for the Dist....I have a mallery unilite dist....and the mallery ignition box..so I really do not know if I can help you here.
Hope I am still helping

I have a 73 351W in my 74 Mustang II with wiring from a 74 with a V-6. The easiest thing to do is to retain the points type wiring and go with a Pertronics ignitor system like you were asking about. You have no other wiring or crap to deal with with this setup, and it still will look original. Best of both worlds.
