timing gears or chain?
I was thinking of getting a new cam for my setup... iv though about the performer cam and the performer rpm cam.. the performer is a little better then stock but not much. i was thinking. since i have to get a new timing set for a new cam maybe i should get timing gears or a new chain and just degree the cam for higher rpm. do you guys think this is a good idea? i run the motor more often at about 4000rpm almost everytime i drive it. i have a bad *** gear setup but it puts me at 4000 in 3rd for 6mph. i dont mind it thouh. i love the acceleration. alway do you think i should run the stock cam digreed with gears or chain? or should i just get the performer cam?
1 more question.. i know the performer cam is made for the performer manifold i have but i want a bigger cam. will it hurt me if i run the performer rpm cam? i want a lumpier idle and more top end power if i can find it. thanks for your help guys.. this site rocks.

Unless you like the whining noise that the gears make go with a double roller timing chain. I would also go with the cam manufactures recommendation because some of them already have an advance built into them.
You can run the RPM cam with the performer manifold you just won't get all the potential out of the cam that you could. The performer manifold is just alittle better than a stock intake and a whole lot lighter.

And regardless of which one you select, I have a new FMS double roller timing chain that is new or a Pete Jackson gear drive that is used. And both are for sale.....

I've seen "noisy" and "quiet" gear drives for sale. Are the quiet ones really quiet or just not as loud as the regular ones? How loud are gear drives anyway?

Gear drive rocks. Much better than any chain out there. Belt drive is even better, but it's expesive.
Go with the RPM cam. It's easier to upgrade intakes later, if you decide you want to (which you will). Take care, ÅChris

66stang...I also have a cam. Its a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Its a Comp Cams 35-330-3. grind number 292. .518/.518. duration at .050 is .244/.244 LSA . Also have the lifters and push rods...magnum hardened number 7472-16. All the parts have been kept with the right lobes. 4K miles on the parts.
All for $150.00. New the cam is $100.00, lifters are $70.00 and push rods are $99.00. Ill throw in the new double roller timing chain for $45.00 ron |

My gear drive is almost as loud as a supercharger sometimes. Depending on which one you get, I've got a quiet one and would hate to have the loud one. You hear it at idle and really hear it when you blip the throttle a bit, but can't hardly hear it at all when decellarating. But they all sound a little different.
