Default Need help

Hi just picked up an 87' Mustang LX for $400. It ran great for the first week and then it died. My problem is that the gas guage was dead so I was told by my friend to fill it up and run it until I run outof gas and count the miles on the odometer, that will give me an idea of how long I can go until it needs to be filled again. Anyway my friend had an earlier Mustang so he though mine was like his-carborated. Well after I ran out of gas I put in a gallon and it wasn't enough to get it going. I was told I needed like 10 gallons. Well it still wont run. Did I fry my fuel pump? I was also told that there is a switch to turn on a fuel pump after you run it dry, is that true? If so where would I find it? Please help...Dean

There is an inertia switch in the rear of the car that cuts off fuel in the case of a collision. I don't know of any type of switch that gets activated when you run out of gas.

Try this. Turn your key on, but don't try to start the car. With your key in the "on" position, you should hear a whine come from the rear of the car. This is your fuel pump. It usually runs for a second or two (you should always let the pump finish running before you actually start the car). If you don't hear this whine, then your fuel pump is not coming on, meaning it could be fried.

Try that our first to see if your pump is even working.
