high mileage GT. Buy or don't buy
As some of you may know the trans on my car went out. Well I'm gonna get a new one and found a 1992 GT 5-speed. The paint is nearly perfect with the only blemish being a star in the fiberglass body panels where a rock hit it. The interior is in preaty good shape and the engine dosn't smoke. I'm gonna test drive it tommorow. BUT the car has 170,000 thousand miles. The guy wants 3,000 for it(but I might be able to talk him down). The car books for 4,000 in good condition. Do yall think it would be worth it to buy this car. The engine would have to last for at least 2 to 3 years. It will remain stock and won't be beat on too much. Should I buy this car or just such it up and look for another stang.

I will remain stock because I don't want to add performace parts to a 170,000 mile engine. Aslo even if I wanted to a mod the engine I don't really have the money to. The car will take me a little less than 2 years to pay off and after that it will take me about 6 mounths to get money for a new engine. So I guess what I'm asking is will this engine last 3 more years.

I would buy it. My mustang has 138k+ miles on it, and it still runs strong. You can't beat those old 5.0's I would also mod my car, but money is tight.

Go for it.
If stuff goes wrong with it, thats the time to start learning how to work on our stang. The information you will learn will be uncomparible to any other car training. ------------------ 1990 GT 5k Original miles!! Ripper,Pullies,73 MM C&l Mass Air,9mm Wires,Piaa Headlights,MAC Cold Air (Fender) |

I'd look around for some Mustangs with a little less miles on it first, and if you can't find one in as good condition with less miles, then go for it.

I learned this the hard way, all i can tell you is when looking at a mustang look for these things:
All lights and electrical accessories work as well as A/C, PS, etc. Make SURE to look underneath the car at the floor for any cracks along the seat bolts and inside the jacking rail and that the fenders line up with the cowl area and there are no irregular bends in the front subframe of the car or anywhere it looks like it's been in an accident. Take it on a LONG test drive, like 15 minutes until it's nice and hot, this will expose any charging problems, overheating problems, oil leaks, etc. Make sure to take it through it's paces to make sure there's no detonation, whining, grinding or other abnormalities. Look around and see what oil he's using in the car. A long test drive will expose a high mileage car with bad bearings and low oil pressure with thick oil because as the engine gets hot the oil pressure will go down dramatically to where you can tell there's a problem. Also remember: a high mileage car won't just need an engine, also the rear-end is high mileage, brake lines, gunk in fuel tank, wasted bushings, worn suspension components, bad calipers or wheel bearings, and many more surprises may await you. My personal advice is to get a low mileage car from an older gentleman who basically used it as a nice weather car. You should be able to EASILY get a low mileage stang that's in great condition for $4000. Also make sure you don't fall in love with a car and forget to check it over with a critical eye, this will also get you better deals. Good luck on your stang purchase tireburner, I know you've been wanting one for a while ! ------------------ previous name: 84stangLX '84 Mustang 5.0 LX my LX '89 Mustang GT my GT |

I know someone who had a stang with that many miles and it was in the shop more than he got to drive it before it just gave out. Why don't you just find a different 5.0? I'm sure you could get one for 4 if that's what the book said they're worth.

My advice? Have the car inspected before you dive in. Suspension parts can be a real PITA.
Otherwise, who cares about mileage, it doesn't mean squat. If the car has been well taken care of, it'll be nicer than a low mileage hacked up rigged up Mustang. So what if the engine is getting tired, it's not as if you can find a much fresher 80k unit for $300-$400 easy. Make sure the tranny isn't making a lot of noise and there isn't any howling from the rear end. If the body is good, it's worth it. |

You guy can forget about me getting that stang. The guys son backed into a curb and shattered the rear bumper. Also after a test drive I noticed a little knocking(I think it was a wrist pin). So I looking for a new stang.
