Default Question about cams

i need your help again guys,
i am thinking on getting a cam well i am getting one but dont know which one? i have a dallas mustang catalog and..well here
my engine is stock as for pistons heads springs.....

idle qualty- pwr range- duration- lift- price

good 1500-5000 284/284 488/488 89.95

ok ok this cam is from lunati and my friend was telling me its not a good cam as it will mess up and stuff and to get a ford racing cam or edelbrock but the price is perfect
is all the specs on this cam good for my engine?????????
there are other cams in the catalog but diff. specs not much of a diff. but a little but the price is a little higher also
are the specs good?
is the cam a good one??
or should i get another one?

I can't say much about the durations and lifts other than the higher you go the more loopy your idle will be and so on. I have a lunati cam on my 289 and have never had any problems with it. Here is some information from the Holley website since they make the Lunati cams.

FWIW, if you're running the stock heads... you're better off getting a split duration cam... something with around 10* more exhaust duration to make up for the poor flowing ports..
you should probably call or e-mail one of the cam companies tech guys and tell them what you want..what the car has done.. etc..

as for cam BRAND... it doesnt really matter.. everyone has there preferences.. I like Comp cams myself..

Do not fall for a bargain priced cam. Some of the grinds are awful and will not work well with your stock engine. Also, its a mistake to think you can install a cam and not change the valve springs. Valve springs are specific to a given cam profile. Here's what happens if they're wrong:

If they're too strong, cam and lifters take a beating and don't last very long.

If they're too weak, the valves float at higher rpm which can result in a blown engine.

Get a cam kit (with all the pieces) from a well respected cam manufacturer who has a good track record with Ford small block engines.

Default Watch the size.

488 lift may be at the limit of what you can run. Check for recommended spring height. Your stock head is about 1.7 inches.
Check out www.summitracing.com and find a kit.
