Default transmission problems

Alright guys, i was coming up a mountain today in 5th gear going about 60mph, when suddenly 5th gear acted like it just shut off and I could no longer go over 50 mph. So i pulled off the road and shut the car off. I proceeded to try and get home, the first 4 gears work just fine, but when i try and put it in the 5th it makes a totally different noise and will not accelerate. It will let me go into 5th gear but won't do anything while i'm in it. I've heard to different things, that my transmission is shot and that one of the belts have came off. So any help would be well appreciated it.

Thank you

Alan

It's a 2001 GT and whatever the stock transmission is...not quite sure what it is.

If its a manual transmission, then it a Tremec T3650. This isn't an easy or cheap transmission to rebuild since it is still considered Ford proprietary. This is why you don't see rebuild kits advertised in the magazines. If it's an automatic, then its a 4R70W (updated AODE). In this case, then its your overdrive (4th gear) that is suspect. Somewhat typical for these transmissions. You'll have to provide a little bit more information to diagnose. Have you taken it to a mechanic yet?

yeah it's a manual transmission and it's at the dealership right now. Just took it in today so i really don't have a diagnoses from them yet. But as far as what happened, my 5th gear just went. My cruise control shut off and my MPH's dropped down to 50. And as i tried to accelerate it wouldn't do anything. I pulled it over, shut it off and then started it back up. Went through the first 4 gears fine and again i put it in 5th gear and i had no acceleration.
