Default vin number location

I just bought a 2001 Mustang GT and noticed some lettering on the engine block (looks like magic marker).

I can't think of a good reason for that to be there, so I wanted to compare the VIN on the engine w/the car.

Anyone know where I can find the VIN on the engine?

Thanks!

they mark the blocks on the assembly line to indicate possible problem areas (red or yellow) or good pieces that have been checked already (black)

i wouldn't be concerned unless it has red markings all over it
