347 vs 351
I am thinking about swapping out my 302 for a 347 or 351w. If I go with the 351w I will eventually but a stroker kit into it. If I go with the 347 I will leave it alone.
I have a few questions. If I get a 351w I know I will have to get a new distributor, oil pan, ac bracket, headers, and flywheel. What else will I need to get and how much is each part going to cost me? Can I get a distributor out of a used car and if so what kind; the car will be carbureted? What other used parts can I get if I can find them that would work? Do you think I will be better off getting the 347 or going with the 351? There is a place here in town that builds 347 strokers with any compression ratio for 2000.00 and I have heard good things about them. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX 12.565 @109.38mph 1.764 60ft |

The stroker would probably be cheaper in the long run due to the fact that stock stuff will bolt right back on. The 351 will be more expensive but has room for improvements in size later. Money always dictates the end result, trust me I know. Im putting in a 347 and a lot of little things cost ya. So im glad I did'nt go with the big block I was wanting,I would'nt have been able to afford it.

One more question. If I get a used motor, what kind of vehicles should I be looking for to get it from? I would be looking for something that I could just drop in and go, or at least as close too as possible.

They did a 347 vs 351 in the 5.0 mag a couple of months back. I chose the the 347 because it is lighter and and I could use the parts that I already had. I see that you have canfield heads... they work exellent on stroker 302's and 351's so you can't go wrong.

The bottom line is....what type of bucks you have will dictate what you get. The 351W will need a hood, a distributor (don't know about used ones...I bought the MSD) and a new lower EFI manifold if your going EFI. In my opinion, the 351W was the right decision for me because I bought my car with no motor or tranny. You have to decide what your budget will allow you to do. If money is no object than go with the 351 stroker and you'll be happy. You can get more HP and torque at a lower rpm than a smaller 302 or 347. Plus, the main caps are stronger than production 302's.
