Clutch and Tranny Oil
My Tremec TKO-II is grinding when going in reverse.
If i shift to fifth gear [beceause of the synchros], I can not go into reverse. I always have to go into reverse from neutral. The clutch is adjustable at the firewall and the shifter is a Pro 5.0 The King Cobra clutch engages about 0.5 to 1 inch when depressed. Sometimes there is grinding from 2nd to 3rd gear at high RPM... it feels like it's still in gear when pushing to 3rd gear, shifting normally. I feel i'm not getting enough grip so i'll give the Centerforce dual-friction clutch a try but in a few weeks. I'll change the tranny oil as well. In the meantime, how do i adjust the clutch so that it will stop grinding. The fifth to reverse situation is normal. In a synchronized Tremec I would run what they recommend. GM Synchromesh. For the clutch pedal, I like to have the pedal loose all the way at the top with about an inch of play. How old is the disc? When you take it out, measure the thickness with a dial caliper and compare it with the new one. The new one will probably be around .315-.320.

Andy, just out of curiosity, what would you recommed for oil in a pro-shifted Tremec TKO II? Face plate pro-shifted that is. Walt went through it for me. Just for the record, I ran Synthetic 5W-30 MOTOR oil in my synchro Tremec with ZERO problems. God, I loved that tranny!!!!

Either Red Line Lightweight Shockproof (green stuff) or Royal Purple Synchromax. I have used both. My G Force T-5 called for SynGearII. That crap was like loctite.

Well heck, I got a few bottles of loctite here, I'll just throw that in! LOL Well, green's bad luck on the race track, so it looks like Royal Purple for me!

Loctite ought to stop the grinding. Jester, you could get the red or the blue loctite so you don't have to use green.

The clutch and tranny is less than a year old. What really bothers me the 2nd to 3rd gear grind at high RPM. I'm getting tired of this adjustable clutch cable and i'm thinking of going back to the stock cable.

Treach, I'm with Andy. My clutch doesn't even start grabbing until about 3-4" off the floor. Like Andy said, only about 1" of play up top though. Sounds like your "tranny" problems are really clutch adjustment problems!
Make sure you tighten the jam nut on the adjuster so that it STAYS adjusted. IEC, think I'll go with the blue loctite so I don't have to heat up my tranny to change it. The blue should just run out of the drain, right?

I resolved the problem. Clutch cable too loose- clutch pedal was lower than the brake pedal.
I tightened the cable- clutch pedal slight higher than the brake and grinding has stopped. My Tremec is shifting 100% smoother as well. I guess i paniced. |
