![]() I am thinking about converting from efi to carburetor in my mustang, what is everyone's opinion on this?
What kind of difference will it make? ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX Best 1/8 time on motor 7.686 @90.20mph [This message has been edited by Five0 (edited 01-03-2001).] |

![]() I talked to a performance shop and they told me that if I went to carburetor I would be faster if it is done right. I can sell the parts I have now for the fuel injection to buy the parts for the conversion but I want a few more opinions.
Right now I am having a problem tuning the car with all the stuff done to it and I don’t want to spend a lot more money on the computer. I can get it to run the best at the track and it runs like $hit when it is cold and I am going to get a 393 stroker soon and I want to be sure it works without a lot more changes to the computer. My cam makes power to +6500 rpm's but my rev limiter cuts out at 6250. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX Best 1/8 time on motor 7.686 @90.20mph |

![]() i must say that going with a srocker set up is the way to go i was going to build a 404 strocker but right now i have other priorities ive seen several late model mustangs with the strocker and. carb set up and they haul butt, you wouldnt go wrong with the carb its like any thing else it has to be tuned properly and add a little nos to the formula and you are really flying good luck R.R

![]() The tune ability is easer from what I hear and I won't have to deal with the stock rev limiter. There is a guy at a speed shop here in town that runs 11.40's on motor with a carburetor and he said he only ran 11.70's with the fuel injection and I am just wondering if it will help me too.
Sorry about the name!!! Hehehe ![]() BTW: That is also my nic name. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX Best 1/8 time on motor 7.686 @90.20mph |

![]() All things being equal, you'll go faster with a carburetor. At least naturally aspirated. A lot of that has to do with the differences in intake manifold design between carbs and EFI, more than the method of fuel delivery.
Tuning is less expensive with a carb, at least initially. Carb parts are inexpensive, and you can do it yourself with a screwdriver, instead of either a) paying someone to burn a chip; b)buying a laptop, aftermarket EFI, and learning to do it yourself. Now keep in mind, cold starts and poor weather driveability are no better with a carb, and often worse. EFI has the ability to compensate for changes in temperature, humidity, altititude, and barometric pressure. Carbs do not. If you have any plans of running a supercharger or turbo, you may want to stick with EFI. There are a few setups available to work with carbs, however, few people run them and even fewer people really know how to tune them well. Of course, if you want nitrous, well, that works with everything. ------------------ Moxie Racing |

![]() At the track you'll gain some but on the street you'll lose a fair bit. I can't race a fuelie mustang from a roll but from the digs it's a different story. If you're running that fast in the 1/8th mile then you've probably got a combo that'll lend itself well to the short runners of the carb intake.
Because my car is street driven and the fact I'd like to go to a Paxton Novi 2000 I'm thinking of going the other way and going fuel injection. ------------------ GT-40 heads (ported, polished, + milled), B303 cam, 1.7rr's, JE pistons, Offy intake, Carter AFB 625cfm carb, Flowtech 1 5/8" shortys, Flowtech X-pipe, MAC Flowpath exhaust, MAC pulleys, 373's, subframes, Eibachs+Tokicos, B+M ripper, FMS Clutch, Zoom Quadrant+cable, 17" CSA Ultra rims, 235/45ZR17 Yokohama AVS S4's, MSD 6A ignition+coil, FMS 9mm wires, Carbed, Naturally Aspirated, and Nasty! |

![]() I had not really thought about the supercharger much but I would like to go supercharged eventually. I guess I have the best set up for that. Thanks for the reply.

![]() I was never a big EFI fan. I don't like the idea of a computer telling me how my car should run. Carb and old school all the way!!! After I took my EFI off my car and eventually put in a '69 351W I'm liking the big, big ET gains. No computer for me.

![]() First, if you are thinking about Turbo's or Superchargers then stay with EFI.
I am in the process of converting my EFI 347 to Carb right now and here are some things to consider. 1.) You will need a Sump on the back of the car. You could modify the Stock fuel tank, but you risk rust forming around the weld if it is not done just right. The really safe method is to put a Fuel Cell in your car and ditch the Factory Tank, which is what I am doing. 2.) Plan on investing money in the following: Carb, Distributor, Fuel Lines, Fittings, Intake, Fuel Pump, and carb style filter. 3.) If you plan on getting a new carb, let me tell you the good ones run you 500$ and up easy, they ain't cheap. 4.) No computer means no auto compensation for very cold weather or very hot weather, it's all up to YOU! to adjust the carb to meet those conditions. So, what is the plus for going with a carb? Well for me it was a real pleaure yanking all that computer junk out from my car and shoving into a box, never having to worry about rev limitations and sensors going haywire and allot of other junk that was acting funny as my motor got more and more radical. Anyway, just a few bits of info. James |

![]() I think I have decided to go with the carburetor.
A friend owns a performance shop for mustangs and he said he has all the stuff to do the conversion and will just swap out the parts and help me install them. So I am going to go up and talk to him more tomorrow and get started, I hope I like this as much as I think I will. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX Best 1/8 time on motor 7.686 @90.20mph |

![]() O-well, no turning back now. I pulled the EFI off the car today and started putting on the carbureted setup, should be done tomorrow.
I’ll let everyone know how it goes. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX Best 1/8 time on motor 7.686 @90.20mph [This message has been edited by Five0 (edited 01-09-2001).] |
