![]() i am in the process of replacing the timing chain and cover, and have just removed the balancer from the crank and while inspecting it, i noticed that the rubber seal on the back side looks like its seen better days. my question is can that seal be replaced or do i need to look for a replacement balancer instead?
thanks |

![]() ya the timing chain cover has a seal that may have come off with the balancer and you can easily replace that

![]() Tha balancer does have a "rubber seal" of sorts, and if it's deteriorating at all, the whole balancer should be replaced. The balancer is actually two pieces that are held together by said "rubber seal". When this starts to fail, the balancer becomes an off balance weight that loads up on the crankshaft main bearings. Engine failure is quick to follow, unless high rpms cause the balancer to fall apart first. Ever seen the damage a balancer falling apart at 6000 rpms can do? It's not pretty.
replace it. Take care, -Chris

that is the part # at summit for a new balancer ford replacement and its only 75.95 pkrwud the rubber you are talking about isnt that part of the damper and not a seal between the balancer and the timing chain cover i have not torn the bottom end of my mustang apart but all the sbc i have worked on this was the case

![]() PKRWUD, you are correct. I looked the balancer over again this morning and it is the rubber that is holding the 2 pieces together that is in bad shape. When i removed it yesterday, i just quick glanced it over , thats why i thought it was just a seal of sorts.
thanks to everybody for the help.Once again the members of this site come thru in a time of need. |

![]() hey, here's a thought. being since the rubber is bad on the balancer, would that be enough to cause a valve tick- type of noise, and if so,on only one side on the motor , or would / could it be on both sides?

![]() It's funny that you say that because i had a bad balancer and a valvetrain ticking or tapping noise. And it sounded like it was from only one side. I've replaced the balancer but the ticking noise remained and had gotten worse. I've seemed to eleviated some of the noise by replacing the lifters on the one side but i still have the noise, just not as loud. In my case i think it was both sides.

![]() A bad balancer made a knocking noise on my car, i was scared at first, but i noticed a missing crank pully bolt, then i knew why the balancer was wearing.

![]() Another source other than Summit for that part is www.oemfordparts.com, they have that part for $68. Not sure that Summit will price match a website.
I bought my brake cables and MC plug from them. Ordered online, and the parts came quick.
