Post setting the timing

Ok, a while back someone told me to remove the plug that goes into the dist. when setting the timing on my '88. I went to adjust my timing yesterday and the the only plug to the dist. shut the car down when you disconnect it. What other plug is it?
I was told to remove it so it doesn't confuse the computer. I can't adjust it if the car isn't running!
Does someone want to tell me what I am REALLY supposed to do please?
