Post Spring Cleaning...Inside the engine?

I am trying to clean up the old rig (95 GT vert, 85xxx), and am wondering what I can do to clean the INSIDE of the engine. I think I might have some built up carbon deps, and maybe some old oil sludge in the pan. I have read about different cleaners being sprayed into the intake, allowing to idle, or whatever, but what really works? A few farmers told me to empty the oil and fill crankcase with diesel fuel and let idle, saying the diesel has enough oil in it to lube while the gas part cleans?!! (maybe for a tractor...)Any other suggestions? I have heard it all, almost...What works?
