Post FINALLY: getting long-tubes !

I did it! Impulse decision to get MAC 1 5/8" longtube headers with MAC offroad h-pipe!
(impulse caused me to buy my car!!)

So, from what I've researched, I might have to deal with the following if I try to install them myself:

1) get longer o2 wires (sensors themselves look fairly new)
2) deal with steering column in the way
3) h-pipe fit (probably not since its MAC?)
4) individual fit with exhaust ports
5) grind out the material near the enterance of the header?
6) clutch wire getting in the way and possibly melting..

Is there anything else that I should look out for?? (you guys who've already done longtubes, anything else? OR, should I just get the shop to do it?)

My car is a 94 5.0 with stock unported heads just in case it matters..

Thanks for the help and input!

I had to pull my starter, jack the passenger side of the motor up to make it fit, ended up putting that one in through the top. Driver side slipped in after i disconnected the steering shaft. I had to remove all the smog lines cause they got in the way of the headers, mine are bbk though so who knows, i was really impressed with the bbk fit and finish by the way, if you haven't ordered the MAC ones yet you might think about the BBk ones. I've heard a few bad things about MAC. GOOD LUCK!!

I had to do pretty much the same thing as Casper did. Lift the motor a bit to get my MAC 1 5/8" long tubes in the passenger side, and the driver side required disconnecting the steering shaft.

My 2 1/2" Cat. H pipe is on, but it has a slight leak. (A testament to MAC's quality). As well as my flow path catback which is the only thing that didn't give me any trouble.

Enjoy them when they're in, they'll make a big difference in power!

Its tough to pick a brand, I've heard good and bad of every one of them (ACTUALLY, I heard only great things about Bassani long-tubes w/ their X-pipe, but can't afford $1500 for that setup CDN)

Thanks for the insight, and yes, I'll let the board know when I get them, and when I put them in, how much trouble I went through, etc..

And yeah Chris, I want faster times, but I also have to get that 60' down to around 2.1.. But, I'll bet the sound after this upgrade will be up there with yours ! (hehe, scare away the rice)

Thanks for the help again!

Installing them is definitely fun. Here's my suggestions from my experience...

1. Go to Auto Zone and buy new O2 sensors. Specify you want the ones with the longer wires. Or, you can always splice into the wires and add a few inches. You probably still have to pull some of the harness around the engine to get even the longer O2's to reach.

2. Get new motor mounts now. You'll have to remove the bolts from the mounts anyway to install the headers and that's the hardest part to changing the mounts.

3. Have at least one friend available to help.

4. Have another friend available for help.

5. If you can get access to a SawzAll by all means use it. It beats cranking on rusted exhaust bolts.

6. If you got the HTS coating don't plan on the headers looking the way they do now for more than a couple weeks if you drive in the rain and snow. I'd suggest spending a little extra cash and have them and the crossover ceramic coated now. But, to each his own. My headers are less than a year old and look like they came with the car
If nothing else some VHT header paint will probably hold up longer than the HTS will.

As for the fit, mine wasn't bad. The header flanges fit perfect and I've had them unbolted from the heads four or five times at least and they bolted right back up to the heads every time without a problem. The crossover isn't bad either if you can get all the bolts started. From there just crank each bolt a little at a time and the tubes will pull into place.

Good luck, and feel free to email me if you need any help with anything.

If you haven't ordered them yet, I'd go with BBK Long tubes, and O/R H-pipe.

What is a SwazAll? To jack the motor can you undo the mounts and hold it up somewhere with a floor jack or A-stand?

Where are the motor mounts and how many?

Do you need a hoist to do all this?

Any other special tools or things like universal joints etc?

Thanks
Chris

When i put mine on i just jacked up on the smog pump bracket i think it is. The motor mounts are pretty obvious if you look under the motor, there's one on each side, one big bolt on the bottom of the k member that holds em on.
