Rear Drum Brake Problem??
Allright here's the deal, I took my old stang out and thrashed it around for a few min. When I came to a stop sign and hit my brakes I noticed a horrible sound coming from the rear. It seems to only do when I push on the brakes and maybe a little bit after that. I haven't done the rear brakes on that car at all, I know that are bad but has anybody heard of them making any noise if they get too bad??? I need help!!! In a week or two I'll probably take the drum off and and check for anything. Any ideas????

Gimme a brake!
When the rear brake shoes are totally worn they'll scrape on the drum and you have a metal-to-metal sound and yes, it's awful. You may also have a cracked drum - not unknown on older cars. Check out the parking brake cable, too.
Either way, you need to pull the drum and be prepared to replace the brake shoes, hardware, possibly the drum and the cylinder, too. The rear brakes get little use but they do wear out. |
