They are there to help prevent wheel hop. You can flip them without it effecting the way they work. If they are very old, it's likely that they aren't doing anything at all and removing them will be no different than having dead shocks. The best thing to do would be to get some aftermarket upper and lower control arms along with better springs and you won't need them at all.
