Question GT-40 Long Block and Cobra Intake

Can I go wrong with the GT-40 Long Block topped off with the Cobra intake? Looks like for under $4k, I'd be set as far as my engine goes. BTW, I'm building a clone of my 93' Cobra for mainly street use - maybe hit the track once or twice a year. My other option would be a rebuild of the stock motor (possibly stroked to 306 cu. in.), heads and the Cobra intake. Thanks for any input.

GT-40 long block for 4 grand isnt the way I would go.

Stock 302 rebuild $1200.00
Bad @ss aluminum heads $1300.00
Bad @ss intake 400 dollars
cam 200.00 dollars
bad @ss exhaust and accessories would eat up the other 900 bux

JMO.

I agree with Dark. For 4K you can blow a GT-40 crate motor out of the water.

And a 306 isn't a stroker motor. It's just a 302 bored .030.


With some AFR heads and a Edelbrock Perfromer RPM II intake along with the correct cam, you should be able to run down into the low low 12's.

Thanks for the input and the info on the 306. So is the consensus in here that AFR heads are the way to go? What about intakes and cam?

If I had it to do over again I would go with Edelbrock heads and intake manifold with a trick flow stage 1 cam and long tube headers.

What about one of those engine kits that Edelbrock has with heads, intake, cam, gears, rockers, etc.? I guess they go for around $2,000, which seems reasonable.

The Edlelbrock kits look great to me and from what I have heard they make the advertised HP.

I went with the GT-40 motor and intake when I did mine. But, if I had to do it again, I wouldn't. That was my first major car project and the motor really has been great. It runs strong and I haven't had any problems with it. But, like all these guys said, for the same price you can build something a lot better. Live and learn I guess .

IMO I would NOT got with the edlbrock heads. They aren't that steller. The only Eddy heads that I think are worth a damn are the Victor Jr's

If you looking for a package I would go for the package that TFS has out.

Yeah, I was looking at the Trick Flow and Holley kits as well. I think I will have the bottom end rebuilt and bored .030, then complete the motor with one of these kits. I'm leaning towards the Trick Flow kit. Is there a specific type of piston I'll need with the TF heads? The kit doesn't come with lifters, what do you recommend? And as far as you know, is there much difference between there regular intake and the Track Heat EFI intake? Summit says the Track Heat intake is good for an additional 10hp and there's only a $50 difference in price.

I'd probably stick with the street intake.

And no you don't need a special piston for the TFS heads.


As for lifters just reuse your old roller lifters or get new FMS ones from summit for like $100.

Thanks for the advice and the information. One last question. I just noticed CHP or it might have been DSS - anyway, I could buy a 306 shortblock outright for about $1,500 to $1,700. If a stock rebuild would cost me $1,200, like Dark_5.0 said, wouldn't it make sense to just buy a brand new, pro-built shortblock? This way I could still drive the car until the new motor was ready.

That's true.

A DSS short block would be a good option. Not to mention they've been balanced and blueprinted. If you can afford it I would go with a DSS shortblock.

If you can afford it I'd spring for the main support and the windage tray......what could it hurt? Your planning on heads/cam/intake now. The main support will be extra insurance if you ever throw on a power adder down the road.
