Hey guys, this summer i plan on putting the big block 429 in my 84. I know this is possible but have alot of questions about it. I already have the car prepped for the motor install, already have the motor, but it needs rebuilt. Im hoping for 500 hp for under $3500. Trans is a c6, will this go into the car? Also, i know i will have to do some suspension work on the front and rear of the car, but hopefully can keep the stock rear in it. Please tell me all you guys know about this kind of project.

You need to talk to Coupe Devil from this board. He's currently doing the same thing to his 86 coupe. I think he got the motor in the other day.

Hey bud, You say youve got the car prepped already, Thats the hard part. I put mine all together a few weeks ago, im running a 429, dove heads, Edelbrock RPM intake, 650 D.p. carb. Motor is stock other than the .030 over bore size. Trans is a c6, stock except for mild street shift kit. 327 gear rear 8.8, currently has a single track but I have a spool waiting to go in. I have no idea what power its making as I dont know exactly what cam this engine has. ( dont ask long story). But anyways. Im running a Canton swap pan Hooker swap headers and FMS Engine mounts.(I got these from Holcomb motorsports and I REALLY LIKE THESE PEICES) Mine went in with relative ease. My best friend has a 86 coupe like mine with aluminum heads c4 and alot more go fast goodies so I have a real good resourse for fixin problems should I have any. I didnt have many at all . If you have to rebuild the motor, I suggest you sit the motor and tranny in the car, see where you have to masage the firewall and trans tunnel.. get used to this it will take yo ua few times in and out before everthing fits but its really not as bad as it sounds.

Thanks for the links guys. Man that is a hoodful of engine, i hope mine looks that good. What sucks though, is that the car was originally a 4 cylinder

and it also has 4 lug axle and some kind of tiny lookin rear end. What i was wondering was would a Ford 8" be ok for the 429, or would i need a 9''. I have an 8'' out of a comet but it is the leaf spring suspension whereas the stang is coil. Could these rears be swapped out? |

I wish I could tell you guys how it feels. I am waiting to get the exhaust put on, and I dont have the rear wheels and tires on ( getting those mounted friday) Ive played with it a little in the driveway with a single track and 14 inch wheels and tires. It felt real strong then obviuosly.

It should run well as I am thinking maybe get a 13.5 out of it like it is. Its a .030 over 429, stock everything other than intake which is a Edelbrock Performer. The exhaust should go on this weekend maybe and I should be driving it next week, i'll feel ya in on how strong it feels. As far as the rear end. Junk the 7.5 thats in that car now, It will last about one good launch on some decent tires with the torque of the big blocks. I suggest you get a stock 8.8 out of a v8 stang. The 4 lug shouldnt hurt, there are guys running 9's on 4 lugs, I only swapped to 5 lug for more wheel choices and the parts were free A 9 inch would be great, if you have one ive seen companies that make mounts that you weld to your 9inch that will make it fit in the fox body. You would also need to cut the axles tubes and order new axles then (as the 9 inch will be wider)I would get a stock 8.8, rebuild the trac loc and maybe upgrade axles to a set of Moser's or Strange axles. I plan on it soon, I was jsut strapped for cash when I put the rear end together.
