Exclamation Is my car supposed to have a swaybar?

Well, actually it is my mother-in-law's 1999 V6 Mustang. It has the exact same rear end as my 89 coupe, but hers doesn't seen to have a swaybar... It is just not there. Is this a mistake by Ford? I am thinking it has to have one. Someone let me know quick. I don't want her to get hurt.

O.K. Somebody please go outside and look under your car if you have a V6 Mustang and let me know. Someone knows the answer to this.

v6 cars have different rear ends, and not having a rear sway bar is not dangerous at all...relax..

How are they different? It is the exact same 8.8" axle with the exact same control arms, springs and shocks. How is it different?

maybe it is the same, but 4 cylinder cars and v6's I thought as well, used to get the 7.5" rear axle.

Default Just the older ones...

All of the new bodystyle stangs have an 8.8(remember the V6 now has 190 horsepower) and the exact same suspension as the Fox V-8 cars except for Cobras which have the IRS setup. That is why I am wondering why in the hell it is missing the swaybar? I am trying to find out before I call Ford so that I can be armed with the right info.

I just put brand new rear coil springs on my 89 coupe that were from a 2001 GT. They use the same coil springs and mine were worn out. I forgot which way the swaybar went back on so I looked under her car and found the swaybar missing.

As a ironic side note....I was swapping my aftermarket lower rear control arms back to my factory offerings this weekend, and I cant seem to get the sway bar bolted back up. I dont remember exactly how it went, but when trying to put it in the most obvious place, it is being a *&*&@#####!@#+&&*$%^@!# to line up!

It does mount in the middle of the control arm, with the nutplate in the middle, and the bolt going from inboard side of arm, through sway bar and into nutplate, right?

Default Right...

Just make sure that the axle is completely hanging with only the control arms bolted up. Undo the shocks so it will pivot down a little more. It should line up perfectly with plenty of room to move around the swaybar. Just use a jack on one end while you line up the other side. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I have the shocks bolted up already. You would think I would have learned, after I had to unbolt the one shock already to line up the opposite lower control arm mount bolt. Lol....I alomost forgot the swaybar completely...I was getting ready to downjack and saw it sitting there.
Anyway, good idea. Ill unbolt the shocks again and see if it gives me the extra movement needed to facilitate line up of mount holes.

It worked, but I had to unbolt the quad shocks in addition to the regular rear shocks.

Default Looks are deceiving!

Exact same suspension? Who told you that? I realize they may look the same, but I guarantee the GT has different bushings, sway bar, etc. As far as the rear goes, the V-6 probably has the 8.8, but without Limited-Slip, and probably with different axles as well.

Have a Ford parts guy look up a sway bar, or a set of coil springs. I guarantee he'll ask if it's a V-8!

Default Off the subject...

I just need to know if it is supposed to have a swaybar or not. I doubt that Ford is going to produce two different sets of axles for these newer cars. By the way, they do share the same suspension components. Different bushings? They have had the exact same control arms since '79.

My '90 LX didn't have a rear anti-roll bar (it's a 4cyl). Ford Garage told me that they were available in a proformance suspension package only. The 4cyl's (probably 6cyl too) were not built as a proformance car and for a smoother ride the rear bar was not standard.

Bushings... The front lower control arm bushings are the only change I know of. At some point they change from round to oval or oval to round. This could also be a proformance suspension thing (my 4cyl has oval), possibly for a "better" ride.
