Post alt caught fire.

Now as far as everything goes, all I have is a stock 5.0/1990. Now yesterday I switched out a Little Kenwood tape deck for a Pioneer CD deck. I didn't look at the wiring diagrams for this little job. (it looked simple enough) Anyway we drove it around yesterday and last night with no problems. But this morning on my way to work the car shut down completly. I could smell that electical burn smell and figured it was the alternator. Popped the hood and there was the flame. the little fire looked like it started at that 3 wire connector on the back of the alternator. I just don't know what it was that I did to cause this. The guy at NAPA said that there has been a problem with this connector and thats why my new alternator came with one. Has anyone heard of this?

Yeah, I've heard of a few alternators going up in smoke like that.

The connector back there is kinda wimpy for the job, but most of the time it gets it done. The newer G3 alternators are better.

Yeah the same thing happened to a buddy twice, that connector back there is famous for that. Did you put your new one on when you did the alternator swap? Put the new plug on and you should be fine, but like Unit said the G3 or equilevent.

Yea, the new one came with a new connector already installed. I just had to splice the wires. She seems to be fine, different but fine. Just no stereo until someone else who knows what they're are doing can install it.
