Default Transmission torque capacity ratings

Can anyone explain how manual transmissions are rated? I need to know if a stock rebuild would be enough for my car. After 150K miles my sychronizers are going out. I have around 240rwhp according to the analyzers, (3400lbs. 14.1@96.xx). I have since installed an 8.8 w/3.73s and HP Megabite JRs after breaking the 7.5 w/2.73s. I am assuming I have well over the 330 ft lbs the FMS M-7003-Z HD T-5 is rated at.

Thanks for the links. I've considered the Tremecs. What I would really like to have is the T-56 for it's .8x and .63 OD gears. BTW, nice car! What clutch are you using? Did you break your T-5? I suppose I will have mine overhauled and baby it until I can get a T-56.

A stock T5 should live very well behind your car - providing your a good shifter. I doubt you have much more than 330lb-ft at the fly. Make sure your rebuilder takes a good hard look at the gear synchronizing teeth - if they are not in first rate shape, replace the sliders and gears (~$80 each). I rebuilt my 190,000 mile T5 and put $150 kit and $150 in sliders and gears in it. Getting proper input shaft bearing load is critical to trans life too. A T56 would be overkill for your car and a Tremec isn't REALLY needed either - like I said providing your a decent shifter.

Darius, I just checked out your site. I guess I have just been lucky all these years with my t-5, considering the abuse I've put it through.

Tom,
Did you overhaul your own trans? Which kit did you use? I have considered doing it myself using the video Hanlon sells. I have heard it is not difficult. I plan to get a Pro 5.0 so the shifter is not so sloppy. I might just get the FMS T-5 since it has the 2.95 first gear and is a relative bargain after adding up all of the upgrade parts.
Thx,
Rob.

Yes, I did rebuild my trans (twice actually as well as others). I have the Hanlon video and it is an excellent tape. Get it. I bought my parts from D&D though. The Hanlon video does not go into inspection quite enough. Use a maginfying glass on the sliders and gears to see how bad the synchro teeth are chewed up. Doesn't take much to change the shifting charactaristics.

If you have 240rwhp...then you are probably not way over 330ft lbs. of torque...if even there. I see in your sig you have a 342 cubic inch motor? If so, then how come you are only pulling 240rwhp? Just curious, what is the rest of your motor combo like? Heads, cam, intake, etc.?

The 342 is in the future, after paint and suspension mods.
Currently I have a 306. It is basically the original 1985 roller block, .030 over, with a balanced and blueprinted bottom end, using ARP Wave-Loc rodbolts, and windage tray, the TRW rebuild kit came with a stock cam grind. I have GT-40 heads from Texas Turbo, they were called "Street Killer"s and were only pocket ported as far as I could tell. I bought them back when they were about the only choice on the market. I am using Crane roller rockers. My intake is a Performer 302 and I have the stock Holley 4180C. I have a Mr. Gasket 925D recurve kit in the distributer. I have Mac shorties, H-pipe w/converters and 2 1/2" catbacks with Dynomax Super Turbos.

I have only ran it at the track once on street tires and 2.73s. On my final pass, I slipped the clutch off the line from an idle and ran it to 6,000RPM in 1st and second gears and shifted between 4,500 and 5,000 into fourth (14.1 at 96.xx). On my first pass I ran a 14.79 at 95.xx, second 17.xx at 93.xx "smoked" the tires, and third 14.24 at 96. It was nearly 100* and very humid.

I ordered a rebuilt 2.95 T-5 from AMP today, with a Pro 5.0 shifter. Tom told me I could use a stock T-5 rebuild, but I opted for the higher first gear since I have 3.73s.
