Need major advice please!! Am I thinking correctly?
I just recently installed the following:
TW heads Track heat intake TFS Stg. 1 cam (.499/.510) 1.6 roller rockers 76mm C&L 70mm TB ASP race crank pulley FRPP timing chain set stewart water pump TCI 2600 stall converter For my exhaust I've got 1 5/8" Flowtech shorties, a Bassani offroad X pipe, and a 2 1/4" dynomax catback with Turbo Tube (?) mufflers that I had installed a while back when I did the 4 cyl to V8 conversion. Also, I've still got the 7.5" rear end with the 3.45's. Friday night was the first time I've took it to the track, and the best I could manage was a 14.19 @ 99.78mph. The 60's were all in the 2.20's on Futura's. I was launching right where the tires felt like they were about to break loose at the line and traction wasn't a problem at all. The car felt like it didn't have anything until it hit the 330' mark and all of a sudden it would pull on mid 13 second cars after that except by then they'd be so far ahead of me I couldn't catch them. What I was wondering is, do you all think I need more converter? I was thinking that the 2600 stall is a little too low for the new combination, but I had it laying around from when I pulled it off my other car so I figured it would be better than the stock converter. I think something up around a 3500 stall would be more suitable to what I've got now. What do you think? Also, I know the 3.45's are too high for this setup too. I've been wanting to swap the 8.8 out of my convertible since it's got 3.73's in it as well, but would they still be too high? Would I need something lower, say like a 4.10? Last thing...I know the 2 1/4" catback is really holding me back, but is it holding me back THAT much? I was expecting something around 103 mph with the 2 1/4" and around 105-107 after I installed a 2 1/2" catback. I was going to get a buddy of mine that owns a muffler shop to make me up some 2 1/2" flowtubes that expand out to 3" and have him weld on some 3" magnaflows with dumps. Does this sound like a good plan or is it overkill? I appreciate any input anyone has to offer here. Afterall...I just spent a couple grand to run 14.20's ------------------ 1989 LX 5.0 Coupe 1992 LX 5.0 Convertible Moderator SN95.com, Stangtec.com |

Do you have the "street" or larger, like
"R" heads? I see you have the track heat intake. That may be where some of your lower end torque is going, especially if you have the larger heads. The Stg 1 cam should be good, but the torque curve of the intake may be a little mismatched to the high side of the cam's curve. 3.73's should help some, don't know about the converter. I did my AOD & researched it a bunch, found that the less expensive converters lost torque multiplication compared to the higher cost ones. I've got a 2500 Art Carr in my upgraded AOD w/stock HO in a 4000lb + Mark VII and it comes of the line strong even w/stock 3.27's. (relatively speaking to stock, of course, for a small stock motor and heavy car). Did you add a shift kit? I'd check www.baumannengineering.com - about the best conventional shift kit (works good in mine), or check www.lentechautomatics.com for the street terminator valve body. All indications are that's the next wave of AOD upgrades. Good luck! |

PS - I've read posts about 4.10's and
most liked em. Likely a WOT chip would help too - trouble is to get one that matches your combo. You're probably down a little on compression pressure, too, if you have stock pistons (becuz of the bigger cam). That will definitely hurt mid-range which helps get you going and up into the higher rpms. |

Last PS! You can gain some mid-range
by retarding your cam timing say 3 deg, but WATCH YOUR VALVE-PISTON CLEARANCE! Ask the cam mfg first! I'd start there anyway - the cam is what all else has to work with, and the guys who made it are the experts. Your timing set likely has offset capability. |

Well it looks like you have quite a good combo there. You should be running 105+ mph. Your 99 is way low. First things to address is how is your fuel pump/injectors etc. Do you have an adjustable FPR? What is your timing at? Since this was a recent install is everything correct, have you done a compression test etc?
I still have a 2 1/4 cat back exhaust system. So that is not a big restirction in your system. There is something else holding you back. Is your MAF calibrated for the injectors you have? Yes more gear will help you. But the gear or the converter are not the problems in your current combo. We'll help you work it out don't worry. I don't have the AFPR, but the injectors are 24#ers and they are the correct ones for my MAF sensor. I have the timing set t 14* advance and haven't yet done a compression test.
The reason I'm thinking it's in the torque converter and gearing is because the car just doesn't even seem to start moving until the 330' mark. I'll start with a compression test this week and we'll see where to go from there. |

AOD's need help/ Lose the TCI converter, and get a PI stallion. Also, at least 3.73's, preferably 4.10's.

Good news! I took it out tonight and decided to shift it manually and ended up running a string of 13.80's @ 103+ mph. My best run was a 13.85 @ 104.22 so I know the horsepower is there. Now it's just a matter of getting it off the line. 60' times are still dismal 2.20's.

I don't know how much you drive this on the street, but I'd go with a 3500 stall converter, a shift kit, 4:10s and some slicks. Get a set of skinny's for the front and prepare to be slammed into your seat when the tree turns green. I wouldn't continue to use the 7.5 inch rear.

We seem to be thinking about the same. We're moving out into the boondox in July so I've got to get a little 4 banger anyway. I've been debating a C4 conversion, but either way I was thinking around a 3500 stall converter with 4.10's and a transbrake. I'm going to run the 7.5" until I break it or come up with a few extra $$ for a built 8.8"...I've got towing insurance
