Default Starter problem...help please

I replaced the 302 in my 1989 Mustang with a fresh 1978 302 and replaced the 78 pan and pump with the 89 stuff but the 78 starter seems to big to fit by the pan. Will a 89 starter mate up to the bolt holes and gear teeth? The trans is 4 speed by the way. Thanks.
